With fishing rod on small rivers

With fishing rod on small riversSpring is not far off, and February can bring many surprises to fishermen-floaters, yearning for open water. In particular, on small and medium-sized rivers, where ice has been falling in recent decades much earlier and fish activity is much higher. On small rivers after ice melting, but even before intense snow melting, that is, before the flood, any changes in the channel flow, narrowing and expansion of the river, and turns are most preferable for fishing. It is important to check the bottom topography; walk along the coast a dozen or two meters to detect differences, pits, mounds with the help of a depth gauge. On middle rivers, especially of the canal type, it is difficult, of course, to determine the features of the relief by eye: the depth gauge and experience of previous fishing, especially the late autumn ones, will come in handy, as perch, roach, ruff, gudgeon do not change their camps in the river from autumn to spring. And experience with observation will help successful fishing.

Preference should be given to two similar gears – a flywheel and a Bologna fishing rod. The similar equipment and the object of fishing – peaceful fish – brings these two types of fishing rods together. About one thickness of the main fishing line in a snap, almost identical floats, distribution of sinkers, again – a place on the river. But there are differences. First of all, of course, in the fishing technique.

Bologna fishing rod

A telescopic rod with access rings is most popular with most fishermen. And primarily due to its mobility. Such a rod, for the most part made in China, is 4-5 meters long, and is most often kept in the trunk of a car even just like that, just in case. The Bologna fishing rod is also a telescope with rings, but of a special design, designed specifically for fishing on a stream with long-term vacation (alloy) of the float from the location of the fisherman. Classical fishing by the Bologna fishing rod is carried out while standing. Equipment with a float is thrown right in front of you, almost like a swoop. The stowage arm of a compact inertialess coil, usually the 1000th series, remains open. We remove the fishing line from the spool, slightly touching the winding with the index finger of our free hand and keeping the fishing line from the top of the rod to the float in tension, and the rod at an angle of 60-70 degrees relative to the coastline.

Keeping the line in tension is important for timely and quick stripping. After all, the vacation of the float is often more than 10 m, and the delayed or delayed hooking will take place either idle or lead to the descent of the fish. At the time of bite, the thumb of the hand, which works with the coil, closes the logger, and at the same time the cutting is performed. For fishing on small and medium rivers, I would recommend rather long rods, from 6 to 8 m. Be sure to be as rigid and light as possible, made of IM7-9 carbon fiber or similar marks in terms of properties. This ensures timely quick cutting, and the ease of such rods will bring great pleasure when fishing. It is worth paying attention to the access rings: it is desirable that there are 1-2 additional sliding rings on the upper knee. On some models, there is an additional sliding ring on the second upper knee. Additional rings provide a uniform load distribution in the top of the rod, and the hooking is clearer.

When fishing in the Bologna way, they are fed downstream by 1.5-3 m, depending on the depth and speed of the river. From the coastline, the feeding sector should be located at a distance approximately equal to the length of the rod, because the equipment is released almost parallel to the shore. Fishing floats use a slightly higher carrying capacity than when fishing in a swoop. It is most convenient to catch with classic keel floats with a long graphite keel, a lavsan antenna and a barrel or drop body made of balsa, preferably with double varnishing. Typically, floats with a load of 1 to 3 g are used when fishing on small rivers 15-30 m wide and 1 to 2 m deep, and 1.5-5 g on medium rivers with a depth of 2-4 m.

But then again, the stronger the current, the greater the carrying capacity of the float should be used. When fishing in the Bologna way in the early spring, it is most effective to surround the float not with several pellets, but with an olive with a pitch so that the distance between them is from 20 to 40 cm. Accordingly, a leash of 15-25 cm is used. Considering the friction on the ring, the main fishing line on the reel they put a slightly larger diameter than on a fly rod. On small and medium-sized rivers, it is preferable to refuel the spool with a monophile with a diameter of 0.12 mm, a maximum of 0.14 mm. Usually at the end of winter and early spring, a meeting with a trophy specimen is unlikely. But since the reel allows you to use the clutch if necessary, even with the main fishing line with a thickness of 0.12 mm, an experienced angler can cope with a 3-4-kilogram bream.

Fly fishing rod

Fly fishing rod is selected according to the same criteria. The tougher and lighter the better. Reducing weight and increasing stiffness proportionally increases the cost of the rod. But it’s better not to be stingy and then get the most out of fishing. Previously, only a few mach lovers could afford quite expensive Italian rods. However, in the past few years, analogues of Chinese and Korean manufacturers can be freely purchased, which are practically not inferior to the “Italians” in quality and technical characteristics. And they cost, as a rule, 2-3 times cheaper than European-made rods.

It is advisable to have several swings of different lengths. For example, 5 and 7 or 6 and 8 m. On the one hand, the presence of a second fishing rod will allow you to continue fishing if one rod breaks; with expensive graphite, especially in inexperienced hands, this happens. On the other hand, having two rods makes it easier to adjust to fishing at the optimum distance. After all, it is not known in advance, especially in the early spring, at what distance from the shore there will be active feeding fish. And whether it will be possible to lure and bring to a working distance, for example, a five-meter fishing rod.

Floats are used for fly fishing during the course of the same construction mentioned above. I prefer products Maver, Kolmic and Fips. But since the distance between the tip and the float is much smaller on the swing, it is much more convenient to throw equipment with an elegant light fishing rod and it is much simpler to control the equipment when fishing, floats of lower carrying capacity are used than on the Bologna fishing rod. For example, at a depth of 1-2 m in the place of fishing, depending on the strength of the current, you can use equipment with floats from 0.3 to 1.5-2 g.

In feeding during fly fishing, the main difference is that the bait balls are thrown, on the contrary, 1-3 m upstream, depending on the depth of the river and the speed of its waters. And the casting of the snap is carried out respectively upstream. And as soon as the float assumes its working position, usually after passing along the river 0.5-1 m, the line from the float to the top of the rod should also be kept constantly stretched, slightly braking the course of the float. It makes sense for 1-2 seconds to stop it in place every meter and a half wiring.

In conclusion about the fishing line. In the working equipment of the fly-fishing rods, which are not designed for catching large fish, it makes sense to use the thinnest monophiles. On 5-6-meter rods – fishing lines with a diameter of 0.08-0.09 mm, on 7-8-meter swings – 0.09-0.11 mm. But even such diameters when using high-quality lines, for example Milo Krepton or Smart Slr, will allow catching awakening river crucian weighing up to 1-1.5 kg or bream up to 2-2.5 kg. The main thing – do not forget at home landing net!
