You were the first to find yourself in a vast body of water (a reservoir, a lake, a river), where a surface of water stretches for several kilometers without any anomalies. Try to find predatory fish here! The task is not easy. You can, of course, ask local fishermen. But, as a rule, they do not give up their catchy places. And this means that you have to look for the fish yourself. And here trolling, or a track, is irreplaceable. The track is a purely Russian invention, but Western anglers managed to modernize this method of fishing. And they apply it in cases where other fishing methods are less effective. By the way, the English word troll means to fish by dragging the bait.
Of all the methods of catching deep-water areas of a vast reservoir, the most effective, of course, is trolling, which allows you to quickly “comb through” large areas of the water area without anchoring the boat every now and then, as is the case with conventional casting. It should be borne in mind that in the technique of trolling fishing there are much more nuances than just wiring the bait behind the boat. Many anglers simply do not think about the fact that predatory fish occupies certain areas in any vast body of water. As a rule, these are underwater eyebrows and grassy "spots". You can find them not only with the help of an echo sounder, but also with a depth gauge.
To begin with, it is important to understand that the bait should go over the mane of algae or along their very edge. Otherwise, the hooks will cling to the grass and collect bottom debris. Moving the boat to the side will mean leaving the perspective zone. Of course, an ordinary depth gauge can also help here. So, if you find a mane of aquatic vegetation at a depth of 4 m, posting to avoid hooks should be carried out from the side of the boat, located towards the shore, and adhere to a strictly fixed course with a depth of 4 m under the boat.
In vast lakes, for example, underwater thickets (rdest, urut, elodea, hornwort, and other plants) are located at depths of 3 to 6 m. Here you have to look for pike ambushes. As for zander, it is most likely to be found where there is a sandy or rocky bottom and there are shelters in the form of snags, flooded trees, piles of stones. Fishermen who do not recognize the echo sounder and prefer to do without this electronic device can also successfully find fish sites using trolling. In this case, in the role of "scouts" you can use deep-diving wobblers, which usually have the word deep in their name.
This is an Invicible Deep Runner (Nils Master) or Down Deep Rattlin Fat Rap (Rapala). During wiring, as soon as the wobbler has touched the bottom, it is necessary to reduce the speed of the boat or move a little in the direction of depth. Thus, the fisherman catches the most promising places: underwater rocky ridges or grass thickets, usually located in dumps in depth. Approximately the same tactics can be chosen when fishing for heavy oscillating baubles, silicone baits on jig heads and weight heads, as well as on some types of spinners, for example Mepps “Lucoxes”.
However, a lot more opportunities for trolling appears when using various depth-lifting devices. First of all, these are bouncers and sinkers, well-known in the West, which make it possible to include far from deep-sea lures in trolling rigs. These are floating wobblers, light, oscillating and rotating spinners, silicone baits. Well, and, of course, the usual sinkers are used – pear-shaped or other shape weighing 10-40 g.
Of particular importance in trolling is the speed of posting. It is likely that fish will ignore the catchy bait, which works well at a certain speed of posting, when moving slowly in the water column. True, this is typical mainly for the summer months. As a rule, the warmer the water, the faster the wiring is needed. If the predator does not hunt at this time, his grip occurs, if only for the reason that he also shows his aggressiveness in protecting habitable territory. And it often happens that in the hot season in the summer, when fishing with trolling, predatory fish grab the bait so sharply that the fisherman hardly holds the rod in his hands.
Trolling, of course, requires special gear. The rod should be rigid, with an elastic tip, so that it does not make nodding movements along the bait. Such a rod (fast action) also transmits signals from the playing bait, including hitting the bottom and algae, which the soft rod will extinguish. A fishing line is best used hard, based on reasonable considerations. The most optimal is a monofilament with a breaking load of 3-5 kg or a high-quality braid with a cross section of about 0.14 mm. Inertial, inertialess and multiplier coils.
The appropriateness of using holders for trolling rods is at least a moot point. When using the oars (instead of the motor), holders are certainly needed, but only if you are fishing alone. On the other hand, the stationary fixing of the rod deprives the angler of the ability to maneuver with the tip of a whip, to diversify the wiring technique, which, of course, does not affect the results in the best way. At depths over nine meters, classic trolling is becoming less effective. In such places, the fisherman always has to make sure that the local sites of carnivorous fish (pike perch, pike, large perch, etc.) require particularly accurate delivery of the bait, and most importantly – more careful monitoring of its game. American anglers, for example, believe that in such situations, backtrolling is the best way to fish.
Technically, it differs in that the boat moves in reverse, that is, stern forward, with minimal speed. Backtrolling is most often used when catching deep sections around underwater hillocks and hills, along stony ridges, flooded channels, etc. Of course, in this case, instead of gasoline, an electric motor is put. In the process of fishing, one hand of the angler lies on the handle of the motor, and the other he holds the rod, maneuvering it depending on the circumstances, changing the course from time to time. The fishing line is constantly located at a certain angle to the side of the boat. Together the fishing technique is simplified. Backtrolling is especially suitable when stepping or fishing with live fish is required.
When fishing for live bait, the predator's bite is clearly visible on the fishing line or on the trembling of the tip of the rod. Immediately you need to switch the motor to the neutral position and open the spool of the coil. Then release some fishing line, turn on the reverse lock of the reel and, feeling the weight at the end of the fishing line, make a sweeping sweep. Immediately you should throw the buoy overboard and only after that start the survival game. It’s also nice to notice how much fishing line has left the reel at the time of the cut. If you hooked a good zander or pike, you need to "anchor" next to the buoy and catch this place more carefully. It often happens that even large predators are grouped in a promising place, not to mention the same kilograms weighing a kilo.
When choosing a bait for trolling, it is advisable to focus on the color of the local fodder fish. But, as experience shows, in most bodies of water the silver color is most often effective. However, in the course and baits, painted under perch, pike, gudgeon and other fish. But what color bait should be used in dark or light water is, in my opinion, a philosophical question. Indeed, predatory fish in any pond eats not only fish trifles. This can be frogs, molting crayfish, various insect larvae, earthworms, etc.
Pike is perhaps the most popular and affordable hunting object with the help of trolling. Optimal rigging for a toothy predator is always a matter of discussion. Some anglers insist on using a soft metal leash for any bait. But this is not always justified. Such a leash is necessary when the bait due to its small size can really be completely in the pike mouth, and the fishing line will be cut with sharp teeth. The same thing if you catch on a snap with live bait. A thin leash of metal will always help you when playing a toothy predator, protecting the fishing line from a cliff. Where water is very clear, pikes are more careful, and in this case, you can take the risk and catch them without a metal leash. Or use a double monofilament leash.
Trolling tactics require more experience than conventional spinning. But they, as a rule, give good results, while other methods do not succeed. Starting trolling from shallow waters and shifting to a depth to the underwater eyebrows, the fisherman thereby chooses the surest way to big fish.
