As you know, fish often rests on quite distant from the coast, often shallow, well-heated parts of the reservoir. It is not possible to get to such places with a flywheel float gear, and the match method is not always convenient. In such conditions, I prefer to catch on a light feeder. You can fish on the feeder both on the river and in bodies of water without a current, but if we use fairly powerful fishing rods for working with heavy feeders during the course, then it is desirable to have a light class fishing rod, the so-called picker, for fishing in shallow waters. But to buy for this purpose a highly specialized and, as a rule, expensive fishing rod, I think, not every angler will want to. And by and large, he will be right. How to solve this problem?
The main difference between a picker and a feeder is a higher sensitivity due to a lower test of the interchangeable tip. Consequently, you can increase the sensitivity of the feeder by picking up the tip of a lighter class to it. Frankly speaking, this is what I did by equipping my Aiko feeder with the tops with a test of 60, 80 and 100 grams with a Browning tip with a test of about a gram to 22. As a result, I got a tackle combining the sensitivity of a picker and the power of a classic feeder, which I needed. Two words about snap. If the bottom is muddy and muddy at the place of fishing, do not feed the fishhead on a too short leash: the feeder can be pulled into the sludge along with the hook. On the contrary, the nozzle located 70–90 cm from the feeder looks more attractive to the fish – the intensity of bites increases significantly.
It happens that the intensity of the bite when fishing from the bottom is less than half-water. In addition, inactive fish quickly falling to the bottom of the maggot is clearly alarming. In such cases, it is worth carrying a small, best insulin, syringe. With its help, you can slightly inflate the maggot with air and make it, thus, floating or just slowly sinking. Of course, this is already an extreme measure, which I personally have to resort to from force once or twice a season, and usually at competitions. But it is better, as they say, to be always fully armed.
And the very last tip. Catching on a light feeder occurs in not very deep sections of water bodies, where a large amount of sunlight penetrates. Therefore, you can not think about the main fishing line – let it be bright and noticeable. But as for the equipment itself, then I would advise you to abandon the anti-twist and replace it with a symmetrical loop made of fluorocarbon with a diameter of 0.3-0.5 mm. A leash is also best made from this material. This will allow you not to suffer from doubts about the visibility of your gear and at the same time give a large margin of safety.
So, the required gear in our hands. But we need not only to submit it to the right place, but also to attract fish to it. This is a matter of another, equally important component of feeder fishing – bait. Today, there is a huge amount of all kinds of bait, starting from budgetary, poor in composition domestic mixes and ending with complex multicomponent imported baits like Sensas, Milo, Marsell, Top Secret. Naturally, imported mixtures, having a rather high price, do not find wide application in everyday fishing. The quality of the bulk of domestic bait leaves much to be desired and often requires refinement. To this end, in the last year or two, I conducted a whole study, trying to develop something inexpensive, but workable, such that if it could not compete with the bait of famous brands in competitions, then with ordinary fishing the difference would not be so catastrophic.
I had to go to different reservoirs according to the fishing conditions, often by a large company for comparison, interfere with various baits, add new components to them, change color, aromatic and flavoring fillers. As a result, I came to the conclusion that when fishing at shallow, up to 4–5 meters depths, the color of the bait is of great importance – it must completely match the color of the bottom. Perhaps the whole point is that against the background of a spotting bait that differs in color from the bottom of the bait, the fish becomes more noticeable to predators, which is alarming.
At first I tried to buy various special dyes for bait, but the price – 500-650 rubles per package – made me look for other ways. The problem was solved quite easily. Recently, some domestic manufacturers began to produce a painted "base" for bait. This made it possible to use the basic bait components of various colors – red, yellow or black – and based on them to prepare the bait of the desired color, the same as the bottom color. If we talk about the main component of bait, then I usually take 1 kg of chopped carp food (costs about 150 rubles per bucket), add to it 0.5 kg of crackers, 100 g of hemp cake, 300-400 g of sunflower cake, 50-80 g strawberry jelly and 5 g of vanilla sugar. All this I mix with the base mixture, selected by the color of the bottom, in the ratio of one part of the bait to two parts of the base.
In order for this bait to work really well, you need to add the material of the nozzle to which you will catch. As a rule, for each kilogram of finished bait with a base, I add 100-200 g of feeding bloodworms or 50-150 g of medium-sized maggot (or both). I would like to hope that my experience will help lovers of bottom fishing, if not equal in success with the athletes, then in any case increase their catches, and most importantly – look at the feeder in terms of beauty and elegance. After all, this is a universal tackle, on which you can successfully catch such fish as a hot melter, bleak, gudgeon and even bitter mustard!
