Review of Mormuscular fishing rods

Review of Mormuscular fishing rodsIn winter, fishing for mormyshka is perhaps the most common type of fishing. If in summer fishermen are usually consistent in their “specialization” – say, a spinning player came to a pond and catches it with a spinning rod, and the floater is not distracted by other fishing methods, then in winter almost everything is caught in mormyshka. Some because they are most attracted to this particular method of fishing, while others get live bait for zherlitsy or just pass the time, waiting for the predator to emerge or the appearance of large whitewash in the feeding place. Therefore, few winter-fishing anglers are indifferent to mammoth gear.

Types of fishing rods

Mormuscular fishing rods can be divided into two large groups: some have a coil and a separate handle, while others have “balalaika” – the body of the coil plays the role of a handle. We will return to the first type of fishing rod in the next review, and now we’ll talk about several balalaika models found on store shelves. What should I look for when choosing a balalaika? The size of the case determines how convenient it is to hold the fishing rod in your hands and, therefore, to catch. Of great importance are also the materials of which the whip, body and spool are made. It is especially important that they are frost-resistant, since in most cases fishing is carried out at low temperatures. Of course, we must take into account the quality of workmanship and the convenience of using gear. True, the assessment of "convenience" is often very individual and depends on the habits and requirements of a particular fisherman. Very good, of course, if some “bonuses” like a spare whip or fishing rod stand come with the fishing rod.

Ice team
There are a great many fishing rods of this kind in stores. They are sold under different names and trademarks, and most often without them at all. Say, on the price tag of the presented sample it was listed “Rod, Russia” – and that’s all. However, the packaging of this product is not much more informative: only the inscriptions “Ice Team”, “Fishing-rod for ice fishing” and “Winter Fishing World” were found on it. Which of the following is the name of the gear remains unclear, so let it be the Ice Team. In general, there are big doubts about the fact that the fishing rod was really made in Russia, but in this case it is very difficult to find out the truth. In addition to the fishing rod itself, there are two plastic whips in the package, a spare reel and legs for stationary fishing. The need for a spare reel seems doubtful to me: not in the cold it is to change it – it is easier to take a spare fishing rod. And everything else is very useful.

The case is made of solid foam, painted in bright colors: in addition to red there are bright yellow and green. The fishing rod is quite compact: body length 68 mm, width 55 mm, diameter of the spool 44.5 mm. The whips 16 and 23 cm long have a landing diameter of 4.5 mm and a tip diameter of 1.5 mm. The material of the whips is rather hard plastic. Their different lengths allow you to choose the equipment option depending on the situation. For example, when catching a perch, it is better to use a short whip, which allows to achieve a high frequency of playing the bait, and with a long one it is better to catch roach and scavenger when a smoother game is required.

The quality of workmanship can be assessed as mediocre: the color is sloppy, the seat for the reel is not clean enough, the hole for the fishing line for some samples was made very carelessly and almost coincides with the hole for the whip, which can cause damage to the fishing line during fishing. But the fishing rod is frost-resistant at a height: the whip in the cold does not lose its elasticity and does not break, and it’s nice to hold the fishing rod in your hand – the case does not cool, because it is made of foam that has low thermal conductivity.

At a very reasonable price, such fishing rods are an ideal budget option: it is often easier to equip a dozen fishing rods and choose the appropriate fishing conditions in the box than to constantly re-equip only two or three balalaikas. The main thing is to carefully choose fishing rods when buying, at least you need to check the hole for the fishing line. The remaining manufacturing flaws are easy to fix or they are not significant. The result is quite working gear for little money, but for many this is important.

D.A.M. Ice 10
The once formerly domestic “secret development” mormyshka is gradually becoming widely known in the world. One of the evidence of this is the successful performances of European teams at the World Championships in Mormyshka, at which Russian athletes previously held unconditional leadership, and the appearance of Mormuscular gear in the assortment of many foreign manufacturers. So this sample was released under the trademark D.A.M., and made almost certainly in China. However, we don’t have to talk with the fishing rod, so where it is made is not so important. The complete set of the fishing rod is not rich – only the fishing rod itself, there is not even a package. For many, the whips are deformed as a result of inaccurate storage and transportation. If this deformation occurred not too long ago, the whip can be straightened with your hands, but if it has lain so long enough, it is better to refuse the purchase.

A fishing rod, executed in a corporate lady's combination of colors – black, red and white, looks very attractive. Plastic housing; its length is 80 mm, its width is 56 mm, and its thickness is only 16 mm, which is a bit compared to other models. The diameter of the spool is 45 mm, the length of the whip is 18.5 cm, the length of the fishing rod assembly is 24 cm. The whip is of medium rigidity, its landing diameter is 4.8 mm, and the tip diameter is 1.5 mm. I would like to pay special attention to the fact that the whip of this fishing rod is not replaceable. Of course, it is possible to pull it out if there is a desire and pliers, but to put it back – no: the special form of the base of the whip will not allow. So, if the fishing rod is still dismantled, you will have to pick up another whip with a landing diameter of about 5 mm in the store and adapt it to the fishing rod.

Besides the impossibility of free replacement of the whip, there are no other claims to this balalaika. All parts of the coil are plastic, the execution is very neat, the parts fit well. The ease of travel of the coil is regulated by a nut. You can not be afraid of its self-tightening, since a transparent plastic gasket is installed between the spool and nut. A cambric is inserted into the fishing line hole to protect it from damage. The whip in the cold does not lose its qualities, but the case, in my opinion, is too cold for the hand, but you should not expect anything else from such plastic. The fishing rod makes a very good impression – it can be recommended to all fishing enthusiasts. True, finding these fishing rods on sale is not so simple, and the price is not suitable for all potential buyers. But if you don’t need a lot of gear, D.A.M. fishing rod may be a good choice.

Salmo ice rod
This model from a well-known Latvian manufacturer appeared relatively recently in our stores, but managed to become popular: apparently, confidence in the quality of gear under the Salmo brand affected. The fishing rod is delivered in beautiful packaging, on which there is information about the product itself and about its suppliers in the CIS and Baltic countries. A fishing rod is made in China, which is also indicated on the packaging. Two whips are included in the package: hard black and soft gray.

The case is 83 mm long and 56 mm wide made of plastic. From above it is covered with soft rubber-like material of bright yellow color. Thanks to this coating, the fishing rod lies well in the hand, and even when fishing in the cold, it is quite comfortable to hold. On the back of the case is marked "River2 Sea". What she does there is hard to say, but the fact remains. The length of the whips is 19.5 cm, the landing diameter is 3.5 mm, the diameter of the tip is 2 mm. The total length of the fishing rod when assembled is 26 cm. The whips are inserted only 1.5 cm and can be taken out quite easily, and this should be taken into account, especially when catching large fish.

It is noteworthy that, unlike other samples, this fishing rod is not equipped with a friction brake. Instead, it has a push-button backstop, more typical of fishing rods designed for sheer gait. When the button is pressed, the coil rotates freely, and when the button is released, the stopper is fixed in one of the special grooves of the spool, preventing it from rotating. How good this mechanism is, the practice of fishing with this fishing rod will show, while there is a fear that if it gets into the mechanism of water, it may freeze and jam the stopper. So it’s better to try to prevent water from getting inside the case. Due to the presence of metal parts – the brake button and the screw fastening the spool – it is not very comfortable to hold the fishing rod with your bare hand in the cold.

Two whips of different power allow you to equip tackle for fishing conditions. The hard whip is similar to the whips of other models, the soft one is really soft: it can even be turned into a ring, and then a slight residual deformation can easily be straightened out by hand. Moreover, in the cold, the soft whip bent as it did in the heat, but the hard whip could not stand it and broke about a centimeter from the base. I want to believe that this is a single marriage and other hard whips work well in the cold. In general, Salmo Ice Rod can be considered a very interesting model, which requires, of course, more careful study. If the breakage of the whip is really caused by marriage, and not by the lack of material itself, from which it is made, this fishing rod is a good option for lovers of fishing for fishing.

Pier Sport
This fishing rod is very different from all the above, and you just can’t tell about it. It is interesting primarily for its design and the fact that it is one of the few "branded" gear developed and manufactured in Russia. The fishing rod is supplied in colorful packaging, on which you can find brief instructions for using this gear and the address of the manufacturer’s website, Pierce. The fishing rod is additionally equipped with “legs” for stationary fishing, as well as a nod of “clock spring”.

Unlike other balalaikas, this fishing rod is equipped with an axle-free spool enclosed in a specially shaped case. Due to this, according to the manufacturer, the angler is spared the danger of winding fishing line on the axis of the reel. The role of the friction brake is performed by the case itself: the degree of braking of the spool is regulated by the fisherman by compressing the case with more or less force. The spool can be completely locked by pressing with a special lock, which can be easily moved with one finger. Outside, the casing is covered with soft material that provides convenient and comfortable fishing, as well as shock absorbing impacts when the fishing rod falls on ice. The total length of the fishing rod is about 23 cm. The length of the case is 88 mm, width 54 mm, thickness 17 mm. The diameter of the coil is 44 mm. A fairly powerful non-removable whip has a length of 14 cm and a tip diameter of 2.5 mm. The whip does not lose its properties in the cold, and the body material does not become brittle.

There are two drawbacks to this fishing rod. The first is the ring mount, with which the spool is fixed in the housing. If you too bend the ring and take out the reel, it can simply come off, which will make further use of the fishing rod impossible. The second minus is a very complex system for transmitting fishing line in the body, which is more like a puzzle or task for coordination of movements. It is very difficult to do this in the “traditional” way, so you have to either wind the line onto the spool and pass it through the hole in the case beforehand, or use improvised means to pull the line through the case. For example, I missed another fishing line from the outside, tied it to a reeled one, and then pulled it out. Perhaps this is the easiest and most convenient way.

First of all, this fishing rod should be recommended to experimental fishers who want to try out tackles of new unconventional designs and are waiting for new experiences from fishing. Of course, this is not only an original invention, but also just a good solid tackle, which will not be superfluous in the arsenal of any lover of winter fishing.
