Open water fishing

Open water fishingThat summer, I was resting in a summer house at a friend's house in the village of Polushkino, from which it is within easy reach of the Moscow River. The weather was warm, the water in the river, too, so we caught fish in the wade. One day, wandering waist-deep into the water, I caught roach well. And he was about to go ashore, as he noticed literally one and a half meters from his feet a very decent chub. The predator was obviously well-fed, as it impressively shifted left and right in almost the same place and seemed to pay no attention to me. The next morning, barely dawn, I came here with a spinning rod. I don’t know whether it’s yesterday or not, but in a spinning Murano spinner with black transverse stripes, after about half an hour of fishing, I caught a chub weighing a little more than two kilograms. This was the first chub in my life, since then I often catch this predator.

As an object of sport and recreational fishing, the chub is one of the most prestigious fish. Beautiful, fast and strong predator. The dream of a fisherman, for whom a worthy rival is valued above all (I mean the fact that not everyone is given a careful chub). This is a river fish, but it also holds in the mouths of rivers that flow into flowing lakes and reservoirs. Finding chub places is not easy. Sometimes it can be found in vast lakes, such as, for example, Seliger, Ilmen. For his sites, he chooses areas with a sandy, rocky or pebble bottom, especially likes to stand under the rifts, in shallow arches, near bridges, as well as near the banks of steep banks with bushes and trees hanging over the water. On large and medium rivers, it often adjoins asp.

At night, a large chub enters the sandbanks with a not strong current. Being a daytime fish, he still did not mind hunting in the dark. This is especially noticeable in the summer, when this predator behaves very phlegmatically on hot days. Clean water and a hard bottom are the main conditions for its habitat, while the chub can be found even in the most inconspicuous small rivers. But when water is polluted by industrial or domestic effluents, the chubs together, as if on command, leave their favorite places. I have repeatedly observed this on the rivers of the Baltic states, Ukraine, and on our trampled rivers and streams, such as the Oka, Upa, the Moscow River, etc.

Experienced chub hunters throw some creature into the water – a grasshopper, a May bug, a dragonfly – and the chub, if it is in this place, will certainly find itself. I transferred this technique to the chub, mindful of how I found graylings in Siberian mountain rivers. Chubs weighing 150-300 g are kept in small flocks; large chubs, as a rule, hunt alone.

ABOUT BIOLOGY OF CHAPTER

From other cyprinids, the chub is distinguished by its broad-faced head, which gave it its name, and an almost cylindrical body, covered with large scales with a slightly golden tint. The back is dark green, almost black, the sides are silvery. The pectoral fins are orange, the ventral and anal are red, the tail is black along the edge. The chub is not only beautiful, but also a strong fish, which reaches a length of 60 cm and a weight of 4 kg. It feeds on soft aquatic vegetation, mollusks, earthworms, young and shed crayfish, frogs, and insects. Along with this, a significant place in the diet of adult individuals is occupied by juveniles of other fish and small fish like tops and bleaks.

It becomes sexually mature at 4–5 years old, spawns in the spring on the rifts. Young chubs are usually kept in small groups walking around the surface of the water. The juveniles are nourished by plankton, small crustaceans, insects and their larvae. 150-gram chubs are already hunting fish trifles, frogs, shed crayfish. An adult chub has powerful pharyngeal teeth, with which it can easily crush hard May bugs or shells. A large mouth allows him to swallow a fairly large feed.

HOW TO CATCH

It is interesting to catch a chub on any tackle: whether it is a float, wire or bottom fishing rod, spinning or fly fishing. In general, the choice of baits and lures for fishing this omnivorous fish is quite wide. In the spring, immediately after the enlightenment of the water, the chub willingly crawls out, the May bug, dung worms, bloodworms. In summer, biting on maggots, caddis flies, millet and semolina porridge, crushed bread, steamed peas, "greens" (mulberry) is more active, and where the crayfish are found – on the crayfish neck. Of course, a lot depends on the geographic location of the reservoir. German anglers, for example, successfully seduce the chub with cherries, berries, even slices of plums. If you are fishing from the bottom, bait is necessary.

It is very interesting to catch a chub in the wiring (both from a boat and into a wade). To do this, you need a sufficiently strong match rod, monofilament fishing line with a diameter of 0.15-0.22 mm, depending on the proposed trophies, and a thinner leash from 40 to 100 cm long. With careful biting and clear water, the leash length is sometimes crucial . For small chubs, the hook is placed approximately 10-12. The float is chosen so that it is stable in the fast flow and does not fall to one side during short-term holdings. You let the float downstream and try to lead the bait over the bottom, mentally imagining how the equipment rises above the bottom during braking. If the first bites occurred 10-15 meters away from you, after noisy fishing, the remaining chubs usually move downstream. Therefore, you have to let go of the snap until the float is visible.

When fishing for bottom tackle, good results are obtained by using pearl barley meat, shedding crayfish, and leeches as nozzles. At the end of summer and autumn, the chub is more likely to take a small gudgeon or frog from the bottom. However, the frog can be caught in the upper layers of the water, including spinning and fly fishing. I prefer to catch large chubs with a spinning rod on small rotating baubles (No. 0–3), painted red or black on the inside. But sometimes, especially in cloudy weather, this predator better takes on silver or golden rotators. Wobblers of yellow-green or green color, also diving to a depth of 2-3 meters, are also good. Their length should not exceed 5–6 cm. When I go for “broad-faced”, on one of the spools of my reel there is always a braid with a cross section of 0.08-0.10 mm, and on the other a monofilament with a breaking load of up to 3 kg.

Fly fishing can begin in May, when the water is clear. At this time, the chub reliably takes on a May beetle, from which hard elytra are previously torn off. In June-July, in the morning and evening hours they catch grasshoppers and artificial flies that imitate insects living along the banks of this river. A high-quality fly reel allows you to let the bait downstream for a considerable distance from the fisherman, which is not so alarming for chubs hunting in the upper layers of the water. The chub pecks quite decisively. Grabbing the bait on the move, he abruptly rushes to the side, and then stubbornly and violently resists. Fishing is simplified if there is a nap with a long handle at hand.
