Fishermen engaged in winter fishing for pike perch in reservoirs often face the question of choosing a suitable fishing rod. Most often fishing is from a great depth, often in areas with a noticeable course. In these conditions, many people prefer to use the wicker: it is more informative, instantly passes the bite and allows you to quickly hook fish. And the cord has an advantage over the course: the bait on a monofilament with a diameter of 0.3 mm still blows noticeably stronger than on a cord 0.1-0.12 mm. Deep spinner fishing and the balancer require quick reeling of the fishing line. If you choose it with your hands, problems immediately begin: you can’t throw the fishing rod far to the side, and the fishing line is very confused under your feet. If it is mono, then it is usually still possible to unravel it, but with a wicker it’s just a disaster. Often, unraveling the cord is delayed up to half an hour, especially if the pikeperch managed to wind it around its spines.
Hand-fishing with fishing line has another unpleasant side. Recently, there have been many lovers of freebies among fishermen who prefer to search not for fish, but for a successful fisherman. It happens that while you raise the pike perch from a 12-meter depth, three or four nimble competitors will drill holes around you. This unpleasant phenomenon was especially widespread on the Volga near Konakovo. Last year we came across real teams of freeloader fishermen who behaved completely indecently. In such a brigade there are up to 7-8 fishermen and one “watchman”: he looks out with binoculars who catches in the district. As soon as someone pulled out a fish, the beholder showed the direction of his company with his hand, and they rushed to drill a successful fisherman.
But fishing, in addition to the catch, involves the opportunity to be alone with nature, calmly search for fish and, of course, a good mood. But when you found your fish, and a crowd of strangers drilled you, then what a mood! So, after such spoiled fishing freeloaders, there was an acute desire to make a fishing rod for lures, which would allow you to choose a fishing line without making wide sweeps of your hands. The idea arose, but for a long time remained unrealized.
At first I tried to find something suitable for sale, but it turned out that with all the variety of ready-made gear for fishing from great depths, nothing suits. There are several reasons. First of all, all available models have coils of small diameter, in addition they are made of plastic, which is uncomfortable to work with bare hands in the cold. Most of the fishing rods that I got on sale had an internal diameter of the spool within 6-8 cm, which means that one revolution allowed us to choose no more than 25 cm of fishing line. To raise the bait with such a coil from a 10-meter depth will have to do at least 40 revolutions, and this is extremely inconvenient.
You could try using a regular inertialess coil – some do it. Its main advantage is a large gear ratio, but there are several big minuses. Firstly, the presence of many metal parts in an inertialess coil gives one inconvenience in the cold. Secondly, the mechanism is quite complex, and getting inside the water in the cold can disable it. Finally, the weight of the inertialess reels is too large, and this is very important, since playing with a winter fishing rod is fundamentally different from spinning.
In my opinion, for fishing at great depths, a fishing rod with a replaceable whip and a large-diameter reel with a brake and preferably without metal parts that the hand touches during fishing was required. At one time I watched the program “Fishing Dialogues”, in which the Saratov fisherman caught zander from the ice using a short fishing rod with a “Neva” reel. The idea itself was liked, it remained only to realize it, but avoiding the shortcomings of the Nevsky: the great weight and the fact that it is all made of metal.
The first question arose about the material. It seems like a lot of suitable ones, but when I figured it out specifically, it turned out that little was suitable. Plexiglass – the material is too heavy to sharpen the spool from a single piece, and if glued from a thin sheet, the structure will turn out to be very fragile. Textolite is very durable, not afraid of either frost or water, but also too heavy. Only polystyrene remains. This material can be very different in mechanical properties, but I was lucky: I found high density foam. I can’t indicate the brand, but immersion in water can serve as an indicator of density: my workpiece was half drowned. Processing foam, even of high density, is quite simple – it is well cut with a knife, but a lathe was used to make the spool.
In general, the design of the fishing rod is quite simple: a handle made of the same polystyrene foam, a spool and a metal rack-bracket for installing the spool on the handle. The diameter of the spool was selected so that it was both large and easy to use. I stopped at a diameter of 15 cm: for one revolution this gives 46 cm of fishing line. The winding speed is quite high – to raise the bait with your hands faster simply does not work. Since when fishing from ice, a large supply of thick fishing line is not needed, the groove under the fishing line made a depth of only about 1 cm, but in this case, 50 m of the cord with a diameter of 0.12 mm fill the groove only halfway. To reduce the weight of the structure, he drilled holes in the spool, and the rack was made of titanium with a thickness of 3 mm. The weight of the equipped fishing rod is 150 g. If there is no titanium, it is quite possible to replace it with duralumin, however, given the lower strength, the stand will have to be made thicker.
There is no special brake on the reel, but the rotation of the spool is easy to brake by pressing it with your finger to the rack – the gap between them is only about a millimeter. In order not to touch the metal in the cold, the base of the rack is covered with a foam pad, the spool handles are also foam. All parts are bonded on epoxy. To ensure free rotation of the bobbin, two ball bearings with thrust washers are used for mounting on the axis. As a lubricant, synthetic oil is used for automotive engines, which retains its viscosity in the cold. A removable pole is used in the fishing rod: fiberglass for catching perch and pike, duralumin for pike perch.
The main advantage of a fishing rod is that you do not need to lower the line or wind it with your hands – everything is done with a reel. It is easy to determine the depth using the spool speed. And you can catch even in mittens, removing them only to release the bait from the mouth of the fish.
