Well, finally it happened! Day and night air temperatures went to a good minus. The most impatient (and free) of the winter-anglers fished on Wednesday tested the small ponds of the Moscow Region. Ice is almost everywhere, but with snow and fish – well, it’s just a disaster. There is no snow at all, ice like glass, so you can’t catch it in shallow water, hence the results: small perches, roasts and rattans. On Friday, December 19, we buy a bloodworm with a friend and decide on Saturday to go to the Oka River near Pushchino to try to catch the culinary perch along the outskirts. But it turns out that we did not take into account one thing – the recent almost two-meter rise and the subsequent fall of water on the Oka. Upon arrival, we got a wonderful picture: the whole river is in icy hummocks. There are places in some places, but they can’t be reached because the ice is thin. Throughout the week, water was falling rapidly, and the ice that formed was just as fast going downstream in large ice floes.
Under Pushchino the current is not strong, and then he got up and sat down, the "construction" of hummocks began. No, not small ice floes, but real ice plates 2-3 cm thick and 2-5 m long. There are piles of ice floes up to 1.5 m high, and all these arts begin from the first edge, from coast to coast. From Pushchino to Serpukhov, the entire river stands in hummocks. It’s not just drilling, but simply walking is dangerous in terms of all kinds of injuries. The ankle, however, is not a rotor knife – you cannot replace a spare one. So lovers of fishing in these places in the winter on “traction” will probably have to change their place, as nature itself “closed” the fish. Let him even take a break from us in winter!
In general, Genka and I walked along the coast, poked ice with ice picks, chatted with the same poor fellow, and drove up the river to the Podmoklovsky Zaton. By the way, the entrances to the river are terrible, floodplain roads, still broken by SUVs in the autumn, and froze with potholes, ruts and hefty clay stones. On machines with a low landing, it happens that you will not travel everywhere. Here we are just on the 12th model of the "Lada" and drove. It was a pity the car, and especially its owner, but, as they say, hunting is more than captivity. But be that as it may, we still got to the backwater. Here on the Oka there is a completely different picture: ice floes of different sizes go along the river and along the very backwaters. The full feeling of spring is ice drift, in general. It turns out that you can catch only in Oka stagnant backwaters and quarries. From Podmoklovsky backwater to Lanshinsky quarry was no more than 2 km – and that's where we headed.
We approached the quarry from the direction of the new sand mine – this is next to the strait connecting the river with the quarry. From the steep coast of the quarry at a glance: there are a lot of people, especially in the old sleeve, opposite the strait and along the perimeter from the village of Lanshino. There is ice in the center, but no one wants to walk on it – it must be thin. And in the new part there is nobody but one single fisherman. The water area is 100 per 100 m with access to the "big" water. We went down to the water. Temperature -4, pressure 753 mm Hg. Art., south wind, 4 m / s, gusts. Ice is like glass, but strong, about 7 cm.
A lot of chub fry in a small plant. It was with her that Gena and I went onto the ice. The depth begins almost immediately from the coast and two meters is already about 3 m. We have never caught a quarry in this corner, and the age of this “water” is young, no more than five years. What tactics can be in a career, and even in an unfamiliar place? I will answer: if you do not know him, then almost none, since the pond is dug and the coastline will not tell you anything. It turns out that you need to drill from coast to coast until you catch on a fish. Where should the perch logically stand? That's right, on the underwater mounds. And you can drill as you like: in a thread, and in a checkerboard pattern – this is how you like it.
So we did: Gena, with a 3-centimeter copper “clove”, began to catch the outbacks along the coast, and I drilled holes from coast to coast on frosted wide ice every 5-7 m. We started fishing – with all transfers – only in 11 o'clock. I equipped a balalaika with a fishing line of 0.1 mm and a nymph under a bug weighing 0.4 g. The first bite and the first perch this season (100 g) happened on the 6th hole from the shore, from a depth of 4.5 m. I pecked quite smartly, on high wiring to a halt. There were no more bites in this hole. For the sake of experiment, I hooked a small moth onto a nymph. He knocked, shook, laid – nothing too. He took a bloodworm and went further down the chain of holes. After five holes at a depth of 4 m, a nimble bite when the mormyshka is torn from the bottom. Two hundred grams percussion kicked, but on such a fishing line, as they say, no options. The third perch (120 g) fell already under the opposite shore from a depth of 3.5 m.
From this tour from coast to coast it was already possible to draw some conclusions. Perch did not peck on the hillocks, but at the bottom point under the hill. It turned out that he did not hunt, but simply stood in the pits, but not far from the hillocks. And the search for pits began. Those pits that were found, but did not work in the afternoon, pleased one or two perches of 120-180 g in the evening. But most often it was like this: one pit (4 m) between two knolls (1 m), 4 holes above it – one hole works. At best, there are two bites on this working hole: one before dinner, the other towards evening. I had about six such pits, and until the evening I caught 11 perches. But Gena found his working hole and out of three holes on a 5 cm balancer the color “engine oil” caught 12 perches of 120-250 g. At the same time, under the shore, at depths of 3 to 4 m, he caught only a “clove” two perch 50-80 g.
At lunchtime, around 14:00, we tried to catch bloodworms, but without result. As it turned out later, our fellow countrymen were at the quarry in the crowd of anglers. They caught mostly small perch up to 60 g, and then it was sad. But it was fun in the crowd, because the first ice, the sun and all that! Most fishermen were with ice picks, and from them the monotonous ringing throughout the pond emanated all day. Their ice was only frosted in some places, and they fished from a depth of up to 3 m. Gena and I only fished in wide frosted stripes of ice and very quietly, without an ice pick – under a swirl. On a completely clear ice, Gene caught two small perches, but I didn’t see anything at all.
Somewhere at the beginning of the fifth, the perch somehow immediately wilted and stopped “butting” the balancer on Genkina’s miracle hole, which was clearly a bad sign. And so I generally saw the last bite at 15:30, and this despite the fact that I did not go in cycles in the pits, but constantly “tried” the mounds and the coastal small thing. At 16:30 we climbed the slope of the quarry to the car, very pleased and on a fine day, and the first fishing of the season.
