Tandem of lures in a spinning rod. Part 1

Tandem of lures in a spinning rod. Part 1Under peacefully dormant water lilies, among reed beds or in deep-sea snags, real tragedies sometimes unfold. And it often happens that a predator chasing a peaceful fish himself becomes a victim of a stronger enemy. Such a far from gentlemanly relationship between representatives of a predatory fish clan is a sin not to use the fisherman. Namely: to apply in spinning equipment baits that imitate both the one who runs away and the one who catches up. It is always a pursuit, always an excitement.

Case study

So, the pond is "stuffed" with pikes, and not just miserable undershots, but real toothy "crocodiles." For example, I have repeatedly managed to unbalance even half-asleep predators who deigned not to respond to single baits. One such instance was especially remembered. It was almost a meter long pike, warming its back at the very surface of the water and impressively, with dignity, it sailed about five meters from my rubber boat, when I approached the predator's parking almost right next to it. Cautiously, without a single burst, retreating, from a distance of about fifteen meters, I sent my light yellow “swing” exactly out of the window. But there was no reaction. Having made three more casts, I thought that the toothy finally woke up and went into the depths or in the undergrowth. Just in case, I decided to resort to a long-tried method: above the bait spoon I attached a short steel leash in a Kevlar braid with a dull green twister on a single hook No. 10.

Cast. A short stretch of the spinner on the surface of the water, a depth of about half a meter. Three or four turns of the handle of the coil … and the pike hit stupidly passed into the hand. A few minutes later the predator was in the boat. She took on the twister. A subsequent autopsy showed that her stomach was full of half-digested nipples, and a decent scavenger tail stuck in the esophagus. One can only guess why a well-fed pike, completely ignoring the lure tested in the case, which in shape and movements resembled a fish, could not resist the two baits. Perhaps the twister seemed like a worm or a leech to her, and she decided to make herself a dessert. Or the reason for this is the excitement of the chase? If you could question the "detainee"! Nevertheless, we will try to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of such equipment.

+ In the vast majority of cases – whether it is a river, a lake or a reservoir – there is no “refined” fishing as such. What I mean? When casting from the shore or boat to a distance of 50-60 m, your bait passes various sections of the reservoir during the posting, differing both in the nature of the bottom soil and the water level. For example, on the pre-channel brow, where the depth is 5-10 m, it is quite possible to meet a zander, a pike, a large perch. As you approach the shore, the species diversity of the fish may be different: asp, chub, ide, grass pike, smaller perch. So if your bait is designed for pike perch, the other fish, as it were, remains “overboard”. And, of course, in such places, a snap of two baits can be more productive.
+ Provided that at a certain site there is a concentration of one fish, the tandem at the beginning of fishing, as a rule, gives the advantage to quickly determine what a given predator is to its taste. You can, of course, change the bait sequentially, choosing the most catchy. But with a tandem, you will do it much faster.
+ The possibility of combinations of artificial and natural baits, attracting a predator not only for its shape, game, but also its smell. The effect can be enhanced with the help of a competently selected attractant.
+ Ability to diversify the color of the bait. Two – not one. The predator has a choice.

– A high probability of hooks and limited choice of fishing spots. An exception – if you use "unhooked".
– There may be problems when fighting in overgrown and shabby places. A bait free from the mouth of a predator can catch on bushes, algae.
– You cannot use two steel silk leashes. Short spins for long and vice versa. In this case, it is more expedient to put one of them from a double monofilament.
– The casting range is slightly reduced.

Tandem Tool Designs

The main diet of predators, as you know, fodder fish. But many of them often prefer other “delicacies” – molt crayfish, frog, crawl, caterpillar, leech, etc. Tandem equipment, for example, allows you to use micro-jigs imitating various living creatures in combination with heavier baits. This not only diversifies fishing, but also often saves from a zero result in periods of weak biting. So what is a tandem? The world's leading manufacturers of fishing tackle, such as Zebco, Berkley, Abu Garsia and a number of others, produce many combination lures (oscillating baits with an additional petal, rotator + twister, rotator + rubber fish, etc.), the distinguishing feature of which is the presence of two various items equipped with a common hook. Such baits are sometimes also called tandems. Although, in comparison with combined lures, tandem equipment, regardless of its design, most often provides for the location on the same axis (line) of two fully “combat-ready” lures, each of which has its own hook (single, double or tee). And here you can’t do without a second short leash.

An example is a ripper fish and a twister fish. These lures work especially well in combination with a twister or streamer. Ready-made tandems or sets for them are currently produced by many companies. For example, the tandem Fly Worm (front sight + plastic worm) manufactured by the American company Zebco. I tested this equipment on ponds near Moscow. She recommended herself very well when catching a variety of predators. The tandem is available in two weight tests: 10 and 15 g. The color of the load head is red and yellow. It works reasonably well with uniform, intermittent and step wiring, especially in daylight and clear water. Each of the Fly Worm tandem lures is equipped with a high-quality hook No. 4/0 from Gamakatsu. By analogy with this snap-in, you can create your own, no less catchy tandems.

When choosing combinations of lures, it is necessary to take into account not only your own tastes, but, first of all, the “interest” of the predator that you are going to hunt. If you have a certain degree of imagination, the scope for experimentation is wide, but it is not worth turning into an end in itself an exciting activity. For starters, you can confine yourself to standard sets: spindle + rotator, spinner + twister, vibrotail + flyworm, etc. The most common option, when the main, heavier, bait serves to provide long casting. If a predatory fish stands far from the coast – this is the best case. When fishing from a boat, you can dispense with casts to a distance of 20-30 m. In this situation, the choice of tandem baits is wider. Say, quite effectively, you can use two light bait, which the predator also cause a sense of competition. It can be both artificial and natural baits or their combinations.

In a classic tandem, the second bait is usually located behind the main bait, usually heavier. The distance between them is determined by the fishing conditions, as well as the ability to make a quality cast without overlap. Some anglers refer to tandem lures, for example, such a combination as a wobbler at the end of the fishing line and a twister on a jig head placed higher on a leash. Or mormyshka with a fry planted on it, although in fact it is an ordinary bait. She has nothing to do with the tandem. As for the double lures, one of which is mounted on a short leash above the main one, in my opinion, such a snap can be called a tandem.

There is no doubt about the catchability of dual lures. When casting, I usually put a lighter, soft bait above the main one. In this case, I attach it not to the jig-head, but to a special single hook with beards on the forend, due to which it holds on more firmly. In contrast to the "piece of iron", the predator soft silicone bait after grasping holds its mouth for some time, and it does not cause him suspicion. This gives you a chance to make a high-quality hooking even with an inconspicuous bite. To talk generally about how predatory fish reacts to the tandem is a thankless task. Therefore, we consider this problem with specific examples, depending on the type of fishing objects of interest to us.
