Spinning rods for catching “white” predator

This article will focus on spinning rods for catching “white” predators, for coastal and boat jig.

“White” predator

Let’s say we catch a white predator – chub, asp, ide – on the rifts of a medium or small river. A decent, as a rule, flow and the potential to catch very large specimens impose a number of specific requirements on the rod. We use floating or sinking wobblers as baits: cranks, fats. On the roll, they give a very decent resistance when driving, but the size and weight of these lures do not allow you to go beyond the light class of the rod, so as not to lose in the casting distance. At the same time, near the rift, there are usually lulls, places with a weak and reverse current, where various minnows and shads are used.

They are deprived of their own active play, therefore, when serving them, it is imperative to play along with the rod. So a certain type of spinning rod has developed for these conditions: it can work with small weights, has good casting, is powerful enough to work with stubborn lures in the current and confidently play large and frisky fish. It is also desirable that the rod could be twitched, since there is no wobbler that would not “shoot” once with uneven wiring. In our opinion, the names of wobbler rods fully deserve two such different models as Talon VI Plus 76LF2 with lure test 1 / 4-3 / 8 oz and St. Croix Avid AS76MLF2 with 3.5-14 grams test, which we we have the pleasure of fishing for a long time. The test range of these rods is just suitable for various “thick” – chub in our understanding – wobblers. VI Plus perfectly fulfills fats up to 11 grams, Avid – up to 14.

Although they will not strain to throw weight and one and a half times more, but the installation of large and stubborn baits will undoubtedly cause difficulties. The power of both spinning rods allows you not to give the fish special chances for playing and does not create problems in strong heat. Besides, “Talon” perfectly works out twitching of wobblers. It is especially pleasant to catch with such a “stick” on medium-sized shads with their own game, such as Cheerful 40F and Alterldem 42SP MR from Pontoon 21 or Masu Master Shad 40 and the like. The ability to feel the moment the bait starts playing allows very fine control of the line. As for “Evid”, many consider him to be one of the best sticks for twitching, so there is no need to comment on him.

Coastal jig

On rivers like the Klyazma, the lower Moskva River or most of the Oka, there is a place for a lover of different-sized Cheburashkas and multi-colored silicone with foam rubber to roam. Usually, for jig fishing from the shore on such reservoirs, they take a stick three meters long with a test of up to 40 g. However, practice has shown that longer spinning rods are not always thrown further. In our experience, lighter, more maneuverable and better balanced rods with a length of 260-275cm often throw better than 3m ones. The main weight range of lures used on reservoirs of this type is 14-25 g; therefore, there is no need for a rod of a heavier class, but at the same time, the power should be sufficient for playing with large fish, regardless of distance and relief. Of course, the spinning rod must have good sensitivity with both tactile and visual control.

Among the successful, in our opinion, models for this type of fishing are, for example, CD Rods Blue Rapid 9’0 “M and Lamiglas Certified PRO X90MXS. These two very different rods perfectly suit our conditions. Model from CD, by in our opinion, one of the best spinning rods of this length and test.Works perfectly with lures from 10 to 26-28 g. Fast action both in statics and in dynamics, amazing sensitivity, excellent casting, lightness and some kind of “intelligent delicacy At the same time, it is quite powerful and holds the fish well.

The powerful butt and flexible sensitive tip of the Lamiglas evoke thoughts of the magnum system, so revered in Russia. Despite the fact that the declared upper limit of the test for lures of the Certified PRO is lower than that of the Blue Rapid, the first rod looks more powerful, which, however, it is, although its own weight is also quite small. The cast of “Lamiglas” is very decent, it works out flawlessly during the game: the powerful butt perfectly holds a large trophy.

Boat jig

We bought a boat! Now, along with the pleasant opportunity to fish where they could not before, there is a problem: how to fish? In jig fishing, we now have access to deep edges on our native reservoir, or you can also throw along a flooded forest or use a heavy jig to handle goose pits on the Volga or Oka. Doing everything with a long coastal stick is not very convenient. But after buying a boat, we, alas, did not have any funds left for the purchase of a complete set of rods for fishing from a boat in various reservoirs. Therefore, we will have to choose one, but so that it is for all cases of our new boat life. And a compromise, as it turned out, is possible!

We settled on two models of the Certified Pro series from Lamiglas that have recently appeared in Russia: XS663-2 and XS703-2. First of all, the lightness of these short rods attracts attention: they are perfectly controlled with one hand and it does not tire at all. Both rods have the declared test for lures of 10.5-21 g, but this, as it seems to us, is only in the case of very stubborn lures: initially these rods were created in a one-piece version for catching American bass. Be that as it may, they easily cope with casting lures weighing up to 28-30 g. The inscription on the rod “3 Power” and the declared power of 20 libres also speak of their very good power indicators. However, all this does not mean that these rods should be overloaded. And we fish from a boat, so a long and powerful cast is not needed.

With the heavy jig sorted out, the Oka and Volga topic was closed. But what about a reservoir with snags and shallow navels? After all, here we rarely go beyond an easy jig. With the lower limit of the test of our rods declared by the manufacturer of 10.5 g, visual control of the jig line at the tip of the rod in good conditions starts from 6-7 grams. And starting from 10 g, the wiring is felt by hand on more or less hard ground, if the braid is thin enough. The lengths of these rods – 6.5 and 7 feet – allow two people to fish in a boat without interfering with each other. It is also easy to re-equip the spinning rod: you don’t need to reach far to the tulip, it is near.

Note that both rods hold the fish very well: variant 703 is slightly better, 663 is slightly worse. Perch does not tear lips, but pike perch breaks through at any depth and distance. A rather lively tip perfectly captures even the most careful bite, and the powerful butt does not allow a large pike or pike-perch to go into a snag or catch on the edge. Tactile sensitivity, we believe, will not cause doubts, given the glorious history of the Certified Pro series.

Summing up

As you can see, the specific situation requires your own approach to choosing a rod. This once again shows that there are no “universal” spinning rods, and ideally, for every fishing condition, you need your own rod. However, as always, you can find exceptions. You’ve probably noticed that some models serve as examples in different situations. The Talon VI Plus 76LF2 and one of our favorite rods, the St. Croix Avid AS76MLF2, can be called such “all-rounders”, albeit at a stretch. But the vast majority of rods still have their own specialization, sometimes very narrow. We have deliberately left out the hand-built rods we have. This is understandable: “custom spinning rods” are of minimal interest to most readers. You won’t see them in stores and won’t shake them in your hands. And it doesn’t make much sense to recommend some rods assembled by the master, since the final result depends not only on the blank, but also on the accessories and many other little things.
