Last ice fishing for zander

Last ice fishing for zanderThe period of the deaf winter, which this year was too long, ends. The end of March – the beginning of April gives fishermen hope for good catches. The ice melts, the water is saturated with oxygen, and predatory fish is activated before the upcoming spawning. At this time, for one fishing, you can catch more than the last month. It is not known exactly when exactly the zander zhor will begin and how long it will last. But fishermen who are constantly engaged in fishing from the ice, are preparing for this period especially carefully. And as soon as the first catches begin, the “fishing telegraph” spreads the news about this to the whole district. Well, let’s and we will try our luck in this wonderful season for the fisherman!

Tactics and fishing techniques

If during the winter on large rivers we searched for zander closer to the channel, now the situation is changing. White fish in search of food tries to come closer to the coastline. Accordingly, the pike perch moves after the prey. I usually go out to the pond in the dark. At dusk, when the sun has not yet appeared, but is already barely shining, the largest specimens come across. In the spring, I always start fishing from shore to depth. First, at a depth of 1 m, then at 3, and so I reach a depth of 10-12 m. But often bites happen somewhere in the middle. After dawn, when the sun is already blind, the situation changes. Fanged now have to look in the most unexpected places. This is a vast plateau in the middle of the river, and shallows. Although these fish are considered twilight predators, in the spring, in search of food, they go to shallow areas even in bright sunshine. And pecking zander now raids.

That is, there are short 10-15-minute exits, for which it is realistic to catch several large individuals. And after biting, it’s like they turn off and you can sit without a bite all daylight. But some fishing in the crowd occasionally catch trophies. As an example, let me give you one interesting incident that I happened to observe on the river. Fishing took place at the end of March on the Kama. The expanses of this mighty river were strewn with crowds of anglers. We successfully got to the morning bite, and I managed to catch the top five good zander. But at dawn, they stopped biting, and everyone was waiting for the so-called "exits." It was more than 15 km to the coast, and the Burano-taxi, which dropped us off from this successful place, was supposed to return only at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. In anticipation of his arrival, we wandered around the district in search of our fish.

By 11 o’clock the sun was beating so that even at 13 degrees Celsius many were fishing without mittens and simply wearing shirts. His eyes blinded, hot tea was not a joy, and most importantly – did not bite. But not everyone … Four anglers walked through the crowd at a distance of 20-25 m from each other. They stopped, drilled holes, fished in each of them for a couple of minutes and went on. Having reached the end of the crowd, the team returned, checking the holes on the way back. If there were free holes nearby, they also caught them. And this tactic brought success. Against the background of complete lack of fish, other fishermen bite from time to time. Someone from this four caught on a large balancer, someone on a spinner. But each of them caught.

After another passage, neighboring fishermen rushed into their holes, trying to catch zander. But in vain. Some walked alongside them, repeating the game with baits. But, nevertheless, units were able to catch. You can try to explain such luck with experience, correctly chosen tactics or choosing the right distance of the bait from the bottom. After all, the bulk of fishermen catch fish right near the bottom, but at times the zander takes the bait a couple of meters higher. And those who discovered this on time were left with a catch. But the fact remains. Some catch, others not! Spring pike perch is a capricious fish. If he does not peck, then this does not mean that he is not under the hole. Therefore, only constant experiments and good luck will help you choose the key to this fanged predator.

Spring Fishing Lures

Of course, from ancient times, the best bait for catching zander is spinners, reminiscent of the food objects of this predator. In the line of winter lures of the St. Petersburg manufacturer EcoPro there are many such models. One of them is SHPROT spinners. She has established herself well this season on the Volga rivers. This lure is convenient to work both in depth and in the shallows. Due to its geometry, it has a friable game, which is very attractive to a predator. What color to choose when fishing on the last ice? Here you need to experiment. In different bodies of water, certain colors of the spinners may be preferred. But on these bright sunny days, I prefer to tint the spinners with a black permanent marker. The dark bait of pike perch is easier to notice against the background of a bright sky. And as you know, under water it is light even in cloudy weather and at great depths.

With the onset of spring, pike perch does not sit in ambush, but actively seeks its prey. Therefore, I advise you to make more sweeping movements when playing a lure, than it was during the dead end, when the game of the bait was reduced to barely noticeable swaying, or to play lure like a mormyshka. And, as I already mentioned, when searching for fish during this period, examine not only the bottom layers of water, but also a little higher. In the spring, large rattins and balancers also work well. Catching on balancers is a separate topic for the story, but I would like to touch on a couple of working models. This is Rapala and the Finnish balancer Nils Master Jigger weighing 25 grams. The balancer is an active bait with its own game, so even heavy weights work fine in shallow water. I prefer the colors with a blue back. In the places of my fishing, these colors are the most subtle.

In the spring, thick puffed ice builds up, and often when played, the balancer hooks to the edge of the hole, the fish goes off. Therefore, I bite off the front hook at the balancer and change my native tee to a larger size, but such that it does not whip over the fishing line while the bait is working. Pike perch rarely comes across the front hook, and this has little effect on the gatherings. But to extract it from under the ice with a bitten hook (especially specimens from 2 kg) becomes less problematic. For those who are not addicted to winter fishing, this is a good time to try their hand. The last ice is a fertile time for both beginners and pros. But observe safety precautions and, if you have never been fishing in the winter, go on ice only in the company of experienced anglers. Good luck
