Float Arsenal and Fishing Strategy

Float Arsenal and Fishing StrategyMany fishing anglers after unsuccessful fishing usually refer to the absence of biting, weather and other justifying factors. Of course, the activity of fish depends on pressure, water temperature, time of year and the characteristics of the reservoir. An important role in achieving maximum results is played by correctly selected bait and balanced gear. But not only the catch in float fishing depends on this. In my youth, about 15 years ago, I preferred sea fishing with a Bologna fishing rod on small and medium rivers, but subsequently, having met with famous sportsmen-floaters and occasionally participating in competitions, I became interested in stationary fishing.

This option of fishing with constant feeding, according to general experience and statistics, is the most effective. If during fishing, the angler, using his knowledge of the reservoir and observation, primarily relies on small flocks of active fish, then in stationary fishing with constant feeding, he is able to attract more fish and cause its active bite. Moreover, by purposefully changing the bait, it is often possible to catch fish quite definite both in terms of species composition and size. However, stationary fishing involves the use of much more gear, additional equipment and, of course, bait.

All this is affordable, but the result is usually obvious. Naturally, not having your own car, it’s not very comfortable to go fishing with a large cover and a volume backpack — the invariable attributes of stationary fishing. On the other hand, such additional physical activity is only beneficial. Going fishing in open water, I put several different types of fishing rods in a cover: two fly fishing rods 5 and 7 or 6 and 8 meters long, a 4.2 meter match fishing rod for long-distance fishing and a 13-meter plug with an additional whale. This is my constant set, regardless of which pond you have to catch – familiar or new, on a river or lake. I will explain this choice with examples.

Last summer, we went with a friend to the Noginsky district of the Moscow Region on the Klyazma River. The place was well known for many years of fishing. Basically, we fished in a pit with a depth of 3.5-4 m, where the large scavenger and roach up to 300 g were almost always well caught, there were bream up to 2.5 kg, kilogram chubs and asps. This time, being on the shore, we were a little taken aback: after heavy rains the river level rose markedly and the course became much stronger than usual. Even snap-ins with a 5-gram float carried too fast, and braking laid out the float almost horizontally. Having suffered so for about half an hour and not having caught anything, he noticed that under the coast the current is much weaker. I disassemble the fly five, put a snap with a fishing line of 0.09 mm and a 5-gram float, measure the depth.

I feed the coastal place with six balls of bait, and after 10-15 minutes things went. Bites followed from almost every wiring with a slight braking of the equipment. Eagerly pecking roach, large scavenger, dace and gudgeon. Apparently, the fish also left a very strong current in the channel under the shore closer to the vegetation. And all this time, the comrade continued to try to catch the full length of the plug rod, looking enviously in my direction. I invited him to disconnect the whale – the several upper knees of the plug – and catch it like a fly fishing rod. But he continued to be stubborn and only an hour later, following my advice, also began to successfully catch.

A year earlier, we were fishing with the same comrade on a large lake in the Khotkovo area in the Sergiev Posad district of Moscow Region. Time is mid-autumn, the object of fishing is roach. We disassembled 13-meter plug rods, measured the depth. On the surface of the lake the fish splashed every now and then – it means that it is active. They fed, drank hot tea and started fishing. Cautious bites happened only once every 10-15 minutes, and the roach came across very shallow. We try different nozzles: bloodworms, maggots, pearl barley – the situation does not change. I do not like to sit in useless waiting. I uncover the 4.2 m match rod, put a 4 + 2 g sliding float, make several control casts at 40-50 m to find out the depth and reveal the bottom swings.

I am feeding from a fishing slingshot a square of about two by two meters with ten small balls of bait. And from the very first cast, the float was surely drowned – a roach for 100 g. As a result, that day I caught quite well, I came across a roach and under 200 g. A friend couldn’t pull a larger roach over a 13-meter distance – our catches varied an order of magnitude. The last example shows how erroneous the opinion that stationary float fishing is passive: came to the pond, threw porridge and wait, napping, biting crucian carp. Modern float fishing involves action, constant movement: frequent reloading of equipment, moving the float along the fishing line to find the horizon with active fish, changing nozzles, plentiful starting feeding and periodic feeding.

There are also unforeseen situations when it is useful to have several fishing rods with you when fishing. Previously, until they raised the absurd fishing cost there, I liked to go to the quarry near the village of Aborino. The reservoir belongs to the Noginsk society of hunters and fishermen, is rich in large roach, bream, bleak, and is stocked up with carp. But fishing in this pond is labor: only experienced fishermen-athletes can catch a few kilograms of fish per day. On the day when my friend and I were on the shore of the Aborinsky quarry, a strong gusty headwind blew. I dismantled the 7-meter long swing and, in order to break through the wind, instead of the gram float commonly used here, I set a keel load capacity of 3 g. After feeding, the fish bite regularly.

I make another swing with a fishing rod, and at that moment a strong headwind. I hear a crack – and my favorite expensive Milo Relix 2000 breaks in two places. My fishing would have ended on this, but there were 6 and 8 m long fishing rods with me. There were also a plug and a match, but I did not want to catch them with such impulses. I did not risk the figure eight in a strong wind, but I successfully continued fishing on the six. By the way, I recommend that search fishermen take a spare fishing rod with them. Anything happens, no one is safe from accidental damage. And forced to finish fishing is always very disappointing.

When stationary swinging on the river, it is useful to immediately disassemble and prepare for fishing rods of different lengths, for example 5 and 6 or 8 and 9 meters. And, accordingly, throw 6-8 balls of bait at two distances. Often in the morning in the first hour and a half, the fish is active at a short distance, and then the nibble weakens – the fish moved farther from the coast. I switched to a long swing – and within an hour or two you catch at a long distance. Then everything is repeated exactly the opposite. And so all day fishing. When fishing on large lakes or reservoirs, you should also use this tactic, because depending on the time of day and weather conditions, active fish either approaches the shore or departs.
