Fishing for bream

Fishing for breamBream is one of the most popular “winter” fish of our strip. Barkfish fishermen – people are mostly fussy, thorough, prefer to fish in well-known places. Whole tent camps often appear here, in which day-and-night hunters await the approach of treasured prey. Often their hopes come true, but more often not. Even abundant and proper bait does not always provide a good catch. Sometimes I also spend the whole night in a small tent above the holes. But this is rare. Usually my friends and I go for a hell bream. Many of my friends have been catching him for about fifteen years, but this bait has probably become really popular only in the last five to seven years.

With the little devil, it seems, the same thing happens as in spinning fishing with wobblers: many consider their absence in the fishing box simply indecent. However, not everyone who constantly carries these really effective baits with them knows how to catch them. On the other hand, one who, having put a lot of effort, felt the tackle and mastered the subtleties of fishing, becomes its loyal fan. My friends and I went this way with wobblers and with little devils.

We began, like many others, with the usual clueless, but quickly realized that the devil in a classic form has clear advantages. As it turned out, almost any linen is caught on it in winter – from roach and breeding to hockey. The bait is also very effective in catching perch. However, if other predators, zander or pike appear nearby, they also do not miss the devil. Directly manic addiction to the devil different bream. Moreover, the fish caught for the devil is almost always larger than that caught for bloodworms or other natural baits.

Having successfully mastered the basics of devilry, we began to search for optimal baits that meet all our requirements. The fact is that the sold models lost hooks during biting and fighting, frayed fishing lines and rusted after three or four fishing trips. I had to master the manufacturing ourselves. Generally speaking, there is nothing particularly complicated about this, but work requires accuracy, even scrupulousness – you have to tinker with every bait. Trying to find the best option, we made a dozen different models and tested them on a local bream. On a little devil 13 mm long with a body in the form of an even roller and with a large tee, all medium-sized linen took well, but bream rarely pecked. We decided to increase the size and, as it turned out, guessed right. I took the bream much more often for a devil 2.5-3 cm long, in addition, a predator – zander and pike – became more caught. On another day, the catch of pikeperch even exceeded the bream in terms of total weight and size of the fish.

The use of heavy bait requires an appropriate gatehouse. The long metal, especially bent upwards, which is used by most devils, when playing with a heavy devil creates a large side vibration, and it is extremely inconvenient to catch them in strong winds. It turned out that the best material for the gatehouse is lavsan. It is sufficiently elastic, is not afraid of low temperatures and endures various mechanical influences, such as impacts on ice. As it turned out, a long nod is completely optional for a good game devil. Moreover, the optimal length of the lavsan nod is only 5-7 cm. However, there is little difficulty. For a tandem of two big devils or a devil and a goat, you need a thick dacron, which is not always there. In this case, the spring construction helps out, in which two blanks are superimposed one on top of the other, the upper half to the bottom, and fixed. The transition to catching larger fish required a little redoing gear and, first of all, changing the fishing line. If earlier the limit was 0.12 mm fishing line, now the diameter has become standard 0.16-0.18.

The success of fishing with a little devil, like any other, largely depends on knowledge of a particular reservoir. It is foolish to go out into the clean ice field of the reservoir with a whirlwind at the ready, hoping only for good luck. Therefore, at first it is advisable to catch in the company of a person who at least roughly knows the topography and structure of the bottom of the reservoir. You can go to places that are preserved in the navigator after summer fishing with a fish finder – this will save a lot of time in searching for promising places.

Whatever fish you are going to catch with a devil, you should start with a search for a bream. Where the flock of bream is kept, there is both pikeperch and another large single fish – perch and pike. If the reservoir is of a channel type, then it is better to dance from the channel, primarily paying attention to the wide adjacent watering, especially with a shortened bottom. Koryazhniki attract both bream and zander, it is possible, because this is almost the only place where fish can find food and shelter. When fishing in strong places, it is advisable to probe the hole on the first lowering of the bait: if there is a touch of driftwood, it is better to drill nearby.

On a recent fishing trip at the Yauza Reservoir, my partner and I found a wonderful snag at a depth of 6-8 meters with a meter and a half ridges a kilometer from the shore. The scavenger here stood tightly and actively grabbed the devil. At the same time, he answered all our attempts to seduce him with a mormyshka with a bloodworm with rather rare bites. As a result, even despite the snowstorm, we were with a good catch, however, we got to the coast by the navigator.

In the middle-end of February, the flocks of the most diverse scavenger and seasoned bream are pulled upstream of the Vazuzskoye reservoir. As a rule, their location quickly becomes known to fishermen, and they follow the fish in large crowds. Fishing is fun and exciting. The main thing is to correctly determine the direction of the movement of the flock and, breaking away from other fishermen, find yourself where the largest, avant-garde bream will pass. Migrating fish pay little attention to bait and a fixed attachment, but with excitement there is enough large bait moving in the middle layers of water. Therefore, since mid-February, when the first course of the bream into the rivers is observed on many reservoirs, catching becomes the most effective.

When fishing for the devil of an active bream, it is necessary to correctly determine not only the place, but also the horizon. The fact is that bream, especially migratory ones, often move and bite not at the very bottom, but half-water, sometimes even under ice. Anyone who walked through reservoirs in the summer with an echo sounder knows that schools of fish, for example at an depth of eight meters, are sometimes located just a couple of meters from the surface.

Fishing features

When fishing for a bream, you should not hesitate so as not to frighten away the flock, but you cannot hurry too much, otherwise there should be a cliff or a gathering. If the bream did not enter the hole the first time, you must be prepared, as usually a powerful jerk follows after that. Predators always accompany flocks of bream and can grab the bait. If one of the working holes is silent, this may indicate the presence of a predator nearby. It happens that he does not immediately notice a small bait, so it’s worthwhile to linger on the hole and make 4-5 extra cycles of the game.

The game when fishing with little devil is quite diverse, but if an active fish is found, the value of the nuances of the amplitude of oscillations and the speed of the bait's rise decreases. Usually, when searching for fish, it is enough to complete 5-7 lifts in each hole to the highest point. Movements are made slowly to notice a nod or any other touch of the bait. The oscillation frequency is 1-3 per second, the amplitude is 3-5 cm. The more passive the fish, the smaller the amplitude of the oscillations, up to half the length of the body of the bait. The last rise in the hole is “pike perch”: fast and with high frequency.

When fishing for reelless gear, the right choice of equipment is important depending on the season. On the first ice, for example, a tandem of two little devils can give excellent results. When the ice builds up, instead of the top devil it is better to put a goat or an ordinary mormyshka. Otherwise, the top devil begins to cling to the edge of the hole, and you have to give a slack, which the fish is always ready to use to get off.
