Every spring, our travel agency “Prostor” organizes a fishing tour after skrey (giant cod) to the North of Norway. Driving a car for 1500 km from St. Petersburg through Finland along the road in Lapland admired the large river Tornionjoki (Tornionjoki), which separates Finland and Sweden, flowing into the Baltic Sea. I always visited the idea to fish here. They say that thoughts materialize, and it happened this summer. Finnish partners organized a short trip to learn more about fishing in these parts of the river and lake. The trip began with a flight from St. Petersburg to Rivaniemi – the city where the residence of Santa Claus is located.
I was met by partner Tony – Finn and drove to the cottage. For a delicious dinner, we spent the evening talking about Baltic salmon. It turns out that a salmon comes to Tornionjoki to spawn from June to August, passing 1,500 km through the waters of the Baltic, to the river. The river is equipped with the "Sonar" system, which shows the exact number of individuals, 50-100 thousand, which spawn every year, the average size is 6-8 kg, there are also giants up to 30 kg! Fishing is carried out under license, records are kept of each individual caught. On the first day, fishing took place on the lake.
They were excellently caught by trolling and jig, good specimens of pike perch and pike were caught, about 10 of them.
During fishing, the guide showed a photo with giant pikes 14-18 kg caught here. In the afternoon he organized a picnic in a picturesque place on the shore of the lake. Perfect cleanliness and beauty very pleased. It is equipped with a special place for a fire, toilet, tent (grill house) – the forestry of Finland monitors cleanliness.
The guide fry his paws “Lapland” and treated him with a delicious salted pike according to his own recipe. In the evening I had to finish fishing, because I moved to another place. We were taken to the same cottage where the famous New Year's ad "Coca-Cola" was filmed.
Beautiful cottage of silver pine in Lapland style. The house had a real Finnish sauna and a Japanese barrel outside for bathing overlooking the forest and the lake.
We had dinner, steamed in the sauna and bathed in a barrel. there was a feeling that they had fallen into a fairy tale, a family of deer looked in, apparently escaped from Santa Claus.
Walked alongside and disappeared into the forest. In the morning we went to the treasured river Tornionjoki.
At the fishing base we were met by the owner, gave out special boats and explained how to catch salmon. Trolling for small bright wobblers.
Suddenly one of the spinnings was bent into an arc, but this bite turned out to be single. There were no results. From the boat, we watched as local fishermen from the walkway caught long white nets of sig from under stones. After lunch, we moved to another base, from the Swedish side. Here we met with new guides. They gave us powerful tackle for catching in a cast: 3-meter spinning, dough to 60-80 gr. with 5,000 coils and 40 gram Toby baubles from Abu Garcia, in bright colors. But this time we were not lucky again. Luck smiled at others. The guys from this base opened their mouths, pulled the salmon for 20 kg!
A little upset we decided to switch to catching trolling. Only pike caught 3 kg. Our Finnish friends explained that after stormy rains salmon now has a very weak bite. One of the guides offered the next day by helicopter to fly to a secret lake in Sweden for huge grayling. But alas, we flew to St. Petersburg. We agreed that I would come again for a week purposefully to catch the cast of Baltic salmon, perch and giant pikes, I was very keen to catch my trophy! One day, of course, is not enough for such fishing.
Flying over Rovaniemi, half awake, I remembered unexpected guests – deer, and I imagined how I come to this truly fabulous cottage with my family in winter, to meet the fabulous snowy world of Lapland and Santa Claus, to ski, and to catch a trophy pike and perch from the ice, where am I without fishing!
