Belief in an irresistible miraculous nozzle is characteristic only for those who begin their journey in fishing. Experienced anglers, without denying the need to select a nozzle, will name many other factors that influence the result. And in the first place they will put, most likely, a study of the habits of fish and knowledge of the characteristics of the reservoir. I had to think about “many other factors”, for example, last summer in the country, when the crucian carp “went on strike” in all the surrounding ponds. Only on one fire pond a very modest and unusual pecked a modest carp. These were not classic, slow and confident, rises or drowning, but "shots in the sky." The percentage of sales was depressingly low: on the first day, one carp was caught for 8-10 bites. Even light sports floats with two attachment points, without registering anything before, suddenly soared up so that the hand simply did not have time to hook. At the same time, the carp nozzle managed to pull off the plant nozzle. In the end, I still managed to find an approach that brought some success. However, first things first.
In my snap, the homemade foam float is slightly overloaded and drowns from the nozzle. Such a load allows you to place the nozzle on the ground. But even this highly sensitive equipment remained ineffective until hook No. 16, or the “troika” according to domestic numbering, was replaced by a hook with a shortened forearm and an incomprehensible designation “0.5” – less than ours 2.5. Naturally, a bad bite demanded to reduce the diameter of the main fishing line and leash in full accordance with the rules of fishing science. The volume of bread pressed was also reduced. Many are mistaken in believing that large fish are caught only on large hooks. How many times have the astonished faces of experienced fishermen been seen when they compared the weight of the caught fish and the tiny size of the hook. It can be seen that they have never heard that the size of the hook depends on the size of the nozzle, not the fish. True, there are sometimes exceptions to this rule, which is well-established by athletes.
I recall a case that occurred many years ago on the Obvodny Canal in the vicinity of the Novokuznetskaya metro station. A good wiring for greens, roach suddenly almost ceased to be detected. Hooks all used 2.5, and before that they had not caused any complaints. Someone, annoyed by empty hooks, put hook number 5 – we didn’t hear about the “import” numbering then – and the fishing got better. The idea was picked up. The size of the fish caught remained the same. Interestingly, the fifth issue worked for only a few days, and then everyone returned again to 2.5. Perhaps at some point the roach ceased to attract a nozzle of small volume, and on the hook number 5 more greenery was placed. However, there may be other explanations, which does not cancel the conclusion about the need to take into account the volume of the nozzle and experiment with it. In general, a fish’s mouth is not always happy with a large piece: it’s simply amazing what droplet the carp sometimes bites, which is caught along with the crucian carp.
And the crucian whims on the fire pond all continued. The bread clip was suddenly sharply rejected – I had to switch to a semolina. But she didn’t work for long: by the evening of the third day, idle “shots” and empty hooks again went on. The chatty of medium consistency was pulled off, and the cool one spit out instantly. In the evening of the same day I prepared bread with cotton wool, the so-called reinforced bread. I thoroughly flavored the lump with sunflower oil, three drops of Corvalol and toothpaste – any other than Coniferous is suitable: squeeze 3-4 mm onto a slice of medium-sized white bread.
Choosing the size of the new nozzle, from time to time I checked the performance of the clip and talker, because they are all derivatives of wheat. But crucian carp clearly preferred reinforced bread. It was difficult to explain this with the action of flavorings: Corvalol and toothpaste were also present in the talker. The size of the new nozzle was slightly larger than the match head. The bait of a rather delicate consistency created by sunflower oil was firmly held on the hook with soft cotton fibers. They didn’t allow you to easily bring down the nozzle and somewhat delayed the “shot”, giving more time to hook, and as a result, every third bite was realized. Having found the optimal nozzle size, I began to experiment with the shape, since the plasticity of the bread allowed for a variety of options. As a result, a shape was found that resembled a very flat grain with a slight thickening on the hook sub-cover and covering the fore-end so that a short tip with a ring peeked out of the nozzle. Now every second fish has been detected.
The next step was the transition from a passive to an active fishing method, in which the nozzle forcibly “plays” along the bottom, attracting fish. The "game" in this pond last summer was successful, but this year it was unsuccessful, which I explained as unsuitable nozzles. In this regard, reinforced bread in the form of a grain promised a lot, but crucian carp refused to take in pauses between pulls, no matter what tricks of the game I tried. He attacked in the very initial phase of the nozzle movement and so swiftly that my hand did not have time to move from the pull to the hook. I had to return to the passive contemplation of the float.
Meanwhile, crucian carp almost ceased to be interested in bread with cotton wool: now the dung worm came to taste, which only attracted rotan a week ago. The nature of the "shots" animal nozzle has not changed, but pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of hooks. Rotanchiks began to peck at the worm only at one in the afternoon, when they were losing the position of the crucian carp, occupied by them in the morning. The hardest thing for me was to put a 5-mm piece of the worm on a tiny hook, sometimes it was possible only with the sixth-seventh attempts. But soon the crucians learned – once again! – with impunity to pull off the microworm. My answer was a microworm worn with a stocking on the forearm and a slightly undercooked barley on the sting, which did not allow the worm to be easily mastered. But crucian carp lost interest in the worm: again, the clamp from the bread crumb began to work. And soon I had to leave the finicky crucian until the next year. I was inclined to explain all his sudden changes in taste with unstable weather, but the analysis of diary entries rejected this version.
The statement of “the set of factors affecting the result” declared at the beginning was not limited to searches for the most catching nozzle and the nature of the wiring. In general, it all started with checking previously known places and choosing the most promising one. The leash was lengthened from 7 to 20 cm with a simple movement of the feed. Its mass was selected by moving or moving weights while maintaining the total mass of the load; various combinations of the distribution of weights by weight and distance from the sub-run were also tested. Instead of a 5-meter swing, a 4-meter one was used to increase the speed of hooking by reducing the length of the rod. The drift of the bobber in the wind allowed to slow down the end of the whip dipped into the water: for some reason, many anglers are afraid of this. Surely there was something else, performed automatically by virtue of a long-standing habit, and therefore not marked by consciousness.
There are a great many ready-made mixes and recipes for bait for crucian carp, so their effectiveness for a particular place and time should always be compared and checked. I myself have long strived to minimize the number of components, their volume and price. Moreover, in my declining years I almost stopped feeding. So, for 16 days of fishing on a fire pond, I threw two pieces of loaf into the water during reconnaissance and a handful of granular compound feed, when it was necessary to pull the fish to the shore during the transition to the Quartet. I will tell you without cunning that with stable casting to the fishing point, it is fed, especially if bread serves as a nozzle. Experienced anglers perform the first casts with an enlarged but weakly sitting on a hook piece of bread to pull it off on the ground. What is not a point bait?
You can understand the athletes, floaters, dumping bait to the bottom of the mountain: fierce competition in a limited space, the inability to choose a place and determining the winner by the number of fish caught. And if this is simple fishing, when you are alone with the fish, when not the quantity of fish caught, but only the new quality of fishing matters? This is its own philosophy: one wants to “honestly deceive”, one wants to prove to the fish that even though it is “cunning, the person is wise”. The manifestation of such wisdom is fishing without bait or reelless non-fishing from ice.
Finally, a few tips for beginner anglers. Do not rush as soon as possible to throw tackle, being on the shore. If there are other fishermen, it is much more useful to first take a closer look at who, how, where and what catches, which floats, sinkers, their distribution, the features of the leash are used and so on. If you are sociable, and the situation allows, you can ask questions about biting. But the greatest benefit can be brought by tracking someone else’s bite, which more convincingly than any words will show the level of activity of the fish, and in addition to the newcomer will tell you at what point to hook. Such “peeping” is especially valuable when the fish is naughty. Returning from fishing, force yourself to describe the nature of the bite. I know how to write tired, choosing the most accurate words. But after a few years, you will be able to judge the change in carpentry manners not only from year to year, but also with various nozzles and in reservoirs of different types and sizes.
