Autumn fishing at Vesyegonsky Reach

Autumn fishing at Vesyegonsky ReachA short wave of the rod – and a small white twister on a heavy cheburashka disappears into the fog. You can’t see the coast, you can’t see the sun that has already risen. Autumn came to the Rybinsk Sea. This year she was clearly late. Usually the first frosts occur here, in the Vesyegonsk region, in the early days of September, and here the tenth has already passed, and the temperature as in August: +20 in the afternoon, +12 at night, and a cloudless sky all day. It would seem that one can only dream of such a thing, but this does not please the fishermen. Those who came to catch a predator would prefer freezing. The fact is that pike and perch on the open spaces of the Vesyegonsky reach all summer are held in mass in the thickets of grass, but when steady frosts begin and the water cools noticeably, they go out into open water. Malek by this time departs from the coast – and zander and bersh are immediately activated. In general, the best time begins for catching a predator, so spinningists try to come here in September. But this year the weather violated all plans and calculations.

The Vesegonsky reach is, in fact, a flooded channel of the Mologa River, and its width in the area of Raspberry streams is approximately 600-800 meters. The flooded bed itself is ten times narrower, while the depth on the bed is about 10-12 meters, from five to two on the surrounding irrigations. There are a lot of dumps convenient for pike perch here, however, looking for it on many-kilometer eyebrows is a very thankless task. Another thing pits and sharp turns of the flooded channel. One of the coolest such turns is located a few hundred meters below the Second Stream, on the right bank. Here on the steep shore there is a glen, which has a continuation under water. The place is unremarkable, and if you do not know, you will pass by. But if you turn on the echo sounder, it turns out that the 10-meter depth begins already forty meters from the coast.

The place opposite the decay, chosen by zander, a few years ago I was shown to St. Petersburg spinning. This year, the very next day, upon arrival, I went to this place. I walked with an echo sounder: everything seems to be as usual, but what about the fish is not entirely clear. Enabled the function of "intensification of fish." The sounder squealed without stopping for a second. I had to turn it off and not turn it on anymore. There are a lot of large symbols at the bottom, but this is a pike perch or a bream – you will not say at once. I estimated the distance to the shore, taking into account the water level, lowered the anchor – a depth of 12 meters. Here is the most pleasant moment of fishing – a few minutes are left before the first bite.

However, casting, another, third – but there are no bites. It doesn’t matter: pike perch addictions change not only from year to year, but sometimes for a couple of days. Changing the bait, but all to no avail. The most unpleasant thing is that some kind of odt is not the same. When the bait goes in shallow water, everything is fine, then it also clearly taps the slope, but at the base the tapping changes – it is no longer felt in the hand, and the tip of my “Lamik” reacts somehow too sluggishly. However, the very first bite returned me to a good mood. But raising the fish, I saw that it was not a pike perch, but a bersh, and weighing no more than half a kilo. After some time, several more of the same ones came across. It seems that the fish is biting, but it’s not at all the one it tuned in to.

As I soon found out, a very unpleasant thing happened: the bottom of the pit and the entire sharp bend of Mologa were covered by silt, and silt doesn’t really like silt. Bersh remained, but stayed only on the gentle slopes of the channel. So after the bait reached the bottom of the dump, it could just be exhausted. I tried to find pikeperch in other areas, but apart from a pair of obviously random fanged kilograms, each one had no other successes. Perhaps I could still manage to find the coveted place where the local zander moved, but then, as usual, a strong wind blew, and it blew without stopping for several days. For my kayak, the weather turned out to be inappropriate.

Of course, I expected that by mid-September the pike would already come out of the grass and take a jig, but this did not happen, and I had to catch it literally at the edge of the grass. You canoe along the coast, you reach pretty thickets, very carefully lower the anchor about thirty meters away from them and, having put the turntable, you begin fishing. If there is a pike, then on the first ten postings she grabs the bait. Here are just a dozen postings managed to make far from always. The fact is that fishing took place at a depth of half a meter, and the pike stood directly in the grass and reacted to the bait only if it went no further than a meter from the thicket. Putting a lure with such accuracy is not so difficult, but when there is no wind. The wind, the more gusty, as they say, "makes adjustments." That lure goes too far from the predator, then it flies into the grass.

Usually the wind began to blow out almost at sunrise and sometimes ended even in the evening twilight. It was possible to hide from it only in the bays, which are located on the opposite shore. Our first trip to the bay after a pike occurred on the most foggy morning. We left before dawn in full calm. At first the fog was not continuous, shreds, but soon he covered the reach like a blanket. I had to go “on tiptoe”, at the smallest speed. A strange feeling: a boat, a motor, spinning rods, people – everything is real, but it seems that the surrounding world does not exist at all.

It was not the first time that the guys caught in this bay and managed to study the most interesting points, but it was necessary to know them. Pike stood under the shore, in thickets that stretched from the shore for 15-20 meters. Throwing bait into this jungle, even if it’s the most unobtrusive, is useless. But among the algae there were narrow sections of pure water – it was precisely on them that it was necessary to draw a lure. It is difficult to notice these passages in the morning twilight, so I did not immediately get used to it and lagged behind the guys in terms of the number of pikes caught, and when the sun went up everything worked out. Pike took medium-sized, about 2 kg on average. Of the spinners, Aglia Long No. 2 with a copper petal worked best for me, the guys preferred homemade turntables.

Bream and other linen

A lot of people come to Vesyegonsky reach for the sake of bream. There are many bream here, it is collected in large flocks, but it adheres only to certain places. In the area of Raspberry streams there are two of them. The most famous is immediately in front of the First Stream. Here on the coast there are whole settlements of bark beetles, and on the water in the morning several dozen boats gather. Most often they are caught either on a ring or on side fishing rods equipped with a feeder feeder with a single leash. The bait is the most diverse, the nozzle is almost always a worm. Sometimes gear has to be alternated: the “ring” is on the course, but if a strong wind drives water from the sea and the stream disappears, they switch to feeder equipment. The bream is kept constantly, perhaps just for the sake of the plentiful bait, which fishermen throw into the water all summer, beginning in late June.

The second famous bream place is located in a pit below the Second Stream. Here the bream flock moves more, and fishermen in their boats follow it. On this trip, white fish presented me with some surprises. It turned out, in particular, that spinning can be used to purposefully catch not only the rudd – this has long been no news to anyone, but also roach. The fishing was so peculiar that I want to talk about it separately, next time.
