When snaking from ice, a well-tuned float rod can sometimes achieve good results. Moscow fishermen, for example, mainly catch bream, roach, and much less often – bream and bleak on this tackle. Types of fishing rod floaters are widely known and simple in design. The most commonly used are traditional “fillies” made of solid finely porous foam. When fishing for bait and bream, the line is set with a diameter of 0.09–0.14 mm, which is best transparent (of course, we are talking about high-quality imported monofilament). In winter, bream often has little resistance when fishing, so the decisive role is played not by the thickness of the fishing line, but by the width of the hole into which large fish should pass freely.
If you gathered for roach or bleak, the diameter of the fishing line is also of great importance. There is only one rule – the weaker the bite, the finer it should be monofilament. However, spring roach under a kilogram of weight or more, of course, will require appropriate gear. In the past, for example, on the Rybinsk Reservoir, such a frisky and strong roach came into the rivers Seblu, Sukhovetka, Ild and others in the spring that the line had to be set with a diameter of 0.17-0.20 mm. In the presence of the same elements of the equipment of the float fishing tackle for different types of cyprinids will be different. Let's start with a fishing rod for bream fishing. The first thing to do is set up the gear correctly.
For the manufacture of winter floats, solid foam is usually used. This material does not require special surface treatment (primer, painting), since it does not absorb water. The top of the float is painted with bright fluorescent colors (red, orange, yellow, green) or in the form of black rings. The float must have sufficient carrying capacity at a minimum size, be sensitive to bite, clearly visible in the hole, securely attached to the fishing line and at the same time convenient to move along it. When choosing the shape of the float, one must take into account the strength of the current, the weight of the sinker (mormyshka) and even the type of nozzle. Usually I use spindle-shaped floats, with which, in my opinion, it is more convenient to cut.
In bream rigging, the sinker is selected so that its weight is slightly more than the capacity of the float. Clearly balancing the sinker-float system is best at home. This can be done in a high glass vessel filled with water, achieving such a load in which the sinker very slowly pulls the float to the bottom, taking into account the weight of the hook and nozzle. A sinker (usually a small lead pellet with a diameter of 2.5-4 mm) I fasten to the main fishing line 3-5 cm from the hook. When biting, the bream, pulling the nozzle into its mouth, tears the sinker from the bottom, and the float slowly begins to float to the surface of the water in the hole; with a sharp bite, it literally flies out of the water. Instead of a sinker and a hook, sometimes application of mormyshka gives the best results.
As for roaches, when preparing float rods for catching this fish, it is necessary to take into account that fishing conditions are different in different reservoirs, and the behavior of the silver beauty is non-standard. But there are general patterns. Before taking the bait, roach must “taste” it. At the same time, the small one pulls bloodworms for a long time, which is why the float often trembles often. Large fish takes more confidently. Unlike a bream, a roach has a much smaller angle of inclination when capturing a nozzle, so the float, if you are fishing on a jug instead of a sinker, only slightly rises at the time of bite. This must be taken into account in order to timely make a cut. With careful biting of roach, it is more rational to use 2-3 fishing rods configured the same way: a small light float, a pellet at the end of the fishing line, above which a leash 15–20 cm long with hook No. 18–14 (hereinafter, hook sizes are given according to the international classification). The weight of the sinker is selected depending on the depth at the place of fishing and the strength of the current. It is necessary to hook up at the moment when the float after small jerking noticeably moves from its place, as a rule, in the direction opposite to the current.
Roach is a capricious fish, so thin, subtle fishing line is sometimes of decisive importance. In most barren ponds, water is much more transparent in winter than in summer. First of all, this circumstance should be taken into account by the fisherman. Depending on the size of the roach, its activity set a transparent fishing line with a diameter of 0.08-0.12 mm. Closer to spring, if you are going to a large roach, the diameter can be increased to 0.14-0.16 mm. Which line to give preference to – hard or soft? It works better in winter under mild conditions, but with strong winds it is more confused. If your fishing rod is equipped with a thin fishing line, it is important not to make sharp hooks and not force events when fishing for large roach. The ice bream is caught on the same float rods as the scavenger. When fishing with a float, be sure to apply bait, marking the fed holes with red flags.
