Spring fishing for herring in the Don. Part 1

Spring fishing for herring in the Don. Part 1Once, returning with Nikolai Ivanichkin (to the Internet world – Kolyanich) from the Seversky Donets from another spring fishing, we decided on the way to turn to the Don, find out what people catch there and how successfully. From far away we saw the busy shores of the Don. A motley string of cars, tents and tents stretched endlessly along a steep coast. It reminded me of some kind of festive carnival, from the sight of which the mood was lifted and there was a desire to take part in it. And the “carnival” that, as it turned out, was dedicated to herring. The people in the coastal tent village lived their troublesome life. Someone tried to rekindle the primus, on which the ear had not had time to boil, someone was digging a hole for storing the catch, and someone was just sitting on a stool and swinging hard to pull the fishing line into the water, trying to seduce the fish to bite. Every 20-30 meters from the cliffs, fishing lines of bottom gear hung, called “elastic bands”, on which here and here, as on an escalator, 2-3 herring sparkling in the sun rose up onto a cliff …

Yes, these are the long-awaited happy moments for most fishermen of the lower Don. With the end of the flood in the Don, fishermen eagerly await the progress of the herring. Some take places in advance. On steep banks it is crowded so that sometimes there’s even nowhere to stumble. As soon as the first signs of a herring’s course are noticed, rumors about this spread with lightning speed throughout the entire Lower Don. Well, guys, how are you? – We ask Kolyanich, trying to give the voice a polite impartiality.

It doesn’t matter, it was better yesterday, and today it’s barely a bucket full, ”one of the“ natives ”modestly answers. Well, it’s understandable, a stupid question, who will tell you that things are good, and who needs new settlers here. Listen, Kolyanich, but I once read that you can catch herring in a spinning. Maybe, well, them, these zander? Let them swim and multiply. Come on next time, let’s rush to the herring? Kolyanich flashed a joyful light in his eyes. On the way home we already discussed plans for the next fishing …

My first spinning herring

After work, hurriedly throwing the previously prepared things into the “seven” Kolyanich, we raced on all sails to the Don, wondering where we better stumble. The place was chosen at the rapids, followed by a sharp dump. The current, washing a small cape, turned into a pronounced stream, which created a reverse flow. Behind the cape, under the influence of the “return”, a decent backwater formed, which was clogged with a deaf snag. Well, what is needed is direct, and there are no people here, and expanse for spinning. A little higher, at the very edge, anchored, was a boat on which an elderly fisherman from time to time pulled out a small herring on an elastic band. It gave us hope to catch something. While I was laying out the things brought from the car under the tree, Kolyanich, swinging a spinning rod, already with a whistle sent a spinner into the distance.

– Seryoga, there is! – Kolyanych said almost in a whisper, gently pulling someone to the shore. Seconds later, a satisfied Kolyanich held a very good copy in his hands. Well, here is the first spinning herring! Our joy knew no bounds. I settled down near him, so as not to interfere with each other. On the second cast of the 9-gram Silver Creek, literally after a couple of revolutions of the coil, I felt a clear click on the baubles – an easy hook, by. Slowly slow down the wiring, click again – there is! The spinning bent into an arc, its end jerking randomly. The cord went abruptly into the depths, then, suddenly changing direction, began to rise up and thirty meters away with a candle herring jumped out in all its glory! Gently pulled her to the shore, threw her into the pool. Both herrings were almost the same size – about 30 cm. Bites were repeated on almost every cast.

Often, when fishing, the fish managed to free themselves from the hooks, making a candle or going deeper and clinging to the bottom sill, which was located at the beginning of the dump, literally five meters from the shore. It only added us excitement and adrenaline. This went on for about twenty minutes. Then, as if on command, the biting ceased. But, it turned out, it was only an “intermission”. Biting has resumed. It periodically intensified, sometimes calmed down, but the herring was caught all evening until sunset. Along the way, remembering the advice of fishermen we knew and comparing with everything that happened, we made plans for what to do next. I want to share many of our findings and experiments, which turned out to be very effective. Kolyanich, it seems, does not mind …

Successful catch options

There are two important parameters for catching a Don herring with spinning, the knowledge of which ensures success in fishing. This is the activity of the herring and the “horizon” of the active flock. First, consider the first – activity. Those readers who are fond of catching herring should understand that along with the influence of hydro mode and the state of the environment as a whole, the activity of the herring course is also determined by weather conditions. When a cold cyclone sets in, its progress is inhibited, and at such a time it is caught poorly. But as soon as the sun begins to warm, the fish immediately becomes active, betraying itself as frequent bursts on the surface of the water. During the period of active biting of the Don herring, up to 3-4 bites sometimes occur during one posting.

The second parameter is the so-called “fishing horizon”. That is, at what depth is it located. For example, in the morning after sunrise and in the evening before sunset, the herring mainly stays in the upper layers, and during the day, in cloudless weather, when the sun shines brightly, it lowers into the lower layers. Herring is very well caught on a cloudy warm day, when the sun is in a haze, and especially cool, in the literal sense, if raindrops slightly break off – at this time the most activity is observed and mainly in the upper layers of water. In windy weather, when waves form on the surface of the water, slapping on the shore, it is better to look for a herring in the bottom layers and at distances remote from the shore. During a thunderstorm, the herring practically ceases to be caught, its bites become weak, cautious.

In search of fishing happiness

About the significance of the horizon of the course of herring (and Caspian herring) I read on the Internet. And now we had to test this in practice, and already on the Don sister of the Caspian natives. So, first you need to determine at what depth, in which direction and at what distance the herring is. For this, I used the fan-based search method at different horizons. For catching the upper layers, it is better to use light spinners, and heavier ones to catch long distances and lower layers of water.

We searched for the horizon, at the depth of which the herring rests, as follows. After casting, holding the tip of the spinning at eye level, we immediately begin to make very slow uniform wiring on the verge of disruption of the rotation of the petal. If the herring is not found in the upper layer, then make the next posting deeper. After casting, lowering the tip of the spinning rod by 20-30 cm, we pause for 2 seconds, giving the spinner a little deeper, and after that we start posting. With each transition to a lower horizon, lower the tip of the spinning rod even lower and increase the pause when deepening. If the spinner begins to cling to the bottom, then the pause during deepening must be reduced or the spinning slightly raised. As soon as we discovered a herring, we remember on which horizon the bites followed, and we carefully catch it.

In order to quickly discover the herring approach, we agreed with Kolyanich: one catches horizons from the surface of the water to the middle layers, the other – from middle to lower. Each in its own conditional sector. Periodically, we changed either sectors or horizons. Who was the first to detect the presence of fish, immediately announced in which direction and at what depth the bite was. If bites were rare, we began experiments with types of postings, which I would like to dwell on.
