What should a fisherman do on a reservoir on a hot July day, when apathy attacks the underwater inhabitants and the bite becomes simply nothing? This question often arises for spinning players who have successfully captured the morning dawn and are planning to repeat success in the evening. You can, of course, continue to experiment with wobblers and rubber, waiting for a flaccid bite or a prank. But usually this activity quickly bothers – after all, I came to fish, not to walk the bait. Some in this situation just go to bed, others go in search of fish, which continues to eat actively in the middle of the day. There is such a fish.
For some time now, on warm summer days, my catch of pikeperch and pike is often supplemented by tench – a secretive and even mysterious fish. What is known about the line to most anglers, especially spinning men? Little. Until recently, I had very superficial knowledge about him. Since the time of Leonid Pavlovich Sabaneyev, fishing periodicals have not progressed very far in this matter – they say that this fish lives mainly in bodies of water with stagnant and slow flowing water, prefers a muddy bottom with algae, is very tenacious – it survives even in winter troubles. The main attachment for her fishing is a worm. Being cut, very thumbs up. Frankly speaking, a little, considering that in some reservoirs, the tench accounts for up to 20% of the total fish population.
How to determine if there is any tench in this place? There is only one way to find the answer: try to catch it! My acquaintance with tench began, after I mastered fishing with a fishing rod with a side nod. As it turned out, catching a tench is not so difficult, and most importantly, it is very interesting. As I quickly realized, one of the main advantages of this fish is its desperate resistance when fighting. In this regard, a kilogram tench, in my opinion, is superior to the same carp or even common carp. As for the behavior, this fish is rather cautious, more precisely, it behaves very carefully when searching for food, so it is very difficult to find out the lines feeding in the thickets of algae. Therefore, using bait is still worth it. This will help to attract fish to a certain place, and you won’t have to spend a lot of time combing the territory in search of an active flock. It is flocks, because one by one tench comes across relatively rarely. Large individuals often walk in pairs, and smaller ones, 200-500 g each, in small flocks of 3-5 specimens.
In connection with this feature of the line, I recall a rather interesting case. One morning, at the Vazuz reservoir, I caught a ten-kilo tench and, lowering it into a cage, I waited for the next bite. About an hour passed, it was already beginning to bake. Having risen from the chair, through the polarizing glasses, I saw that my tench is calmly standing near the cage. Having decided that a hole in it and a fish had come out, I lifted the cage out of the water – and the tench, leaving a cloud of turbidity goodbye, disappeared into the depths. Imagine my surprise when I pulled out the entire cage and found that there were no holes in it, but the caught tench in place. After all that I saw, I did not hesitate to let the prisoner go to his faithful comrade. And for feeding the tench, you can use almost any bream or carp bait. Of those that I have successfully used myself, I can name Fish Bait, “Minenko – bream, roach”, and “Mironoff – bream, roach, crucian carp, anise.”
When there is a lot of tench in the pond, but because of the large depth of vegetation on the surface is not visible, it is more profitable to feed one place in order to collect the surrounding lines on it if possible. In this case, the starter feed should be voluminous: up to a dozen balls the size of an orange. So that the tench does not look for a nozzle that has fallen into the bottom vegetation, which, as a rule, is in excess, it is advisable to clear the patch where the nozzle will go. It is not necessary to arrive in advance for this, because the turbidity raised from the bottom not only does not scare away the line, but also attracts it. So the first bite can be seen literally half an hour after cleaning the place. In such conditions, fishing with a float is preferable.
The approach of fish to bait can be detected by small bubbles that rise from the bottom. From this moment you need to be very careful. The bite of the line resembles a mediocre theatrical performance – long and painfully. Sometimes a story can drag on for about twenty minutes. However, hooking at the first touch of the fish to the nozzle is at least useless. Only a complete utop or a purposeful trip of the float to the side indicates that the nozzle is in the mouth of the fish. When fishing directly in the windows among the algae, the behavior of the tench changes so much that sometimes it seems that it is a completely different kind of fish. He bites here already confidently, in a businesslike way, and bites sometimes last only a few seconds, after which the bobber instantly dives under the carpet of vegetation or slowly but surely starts moving towards the edge of the window.
Such confidence is most likely due to the fact that under the thick cover of rdest or water lilies, tench feels completely safe and takes the nozzle without hesitation. In such places, it is preferable to catch a fishing rod with a side nod, which allows you to lower the nozzle into the most impenetrable wilds. In this case, feeding is also not out of place, but the tactics of feeding are a little different, which allows, by the way, to save. Given the price of a good bait, this is not the last consideration.
Having chosen several places where fish can appear, it is worth throwing a small lump of bait – literally the volume of one medium feeder feeder – into each of them and then checking them one by one. There are plenty of places for such fishing in any body of water. These are slightly overgrown gaps in a dense carpet of algae, small windows, spots of horsetail, reeds or coogs in solid fields of rdest. In those places where the bite of the tench took place, it is worth feeding one more time, but if the point works constantly, then it is not a sin to clear it in order to catch a float fishing rod here.
It should be noted that the really notorious worm turned out to be the most attractive nozzle. Although in some reservoirs he was competed with maggot, a crust of white bread and dough. Sometimes even canned corn works well. Having once lost all the attachments, I was convinced that the tench is also very responsive to “pasture”. In any case, I managed to catch how decent the fish were in the larvae of some insects, which cannot be determined without a special reference.
Be that as it may, but going fishing in the middle of summer, it is worth taking a fishing rod with you, which will not let you get bored in the hot afternoon, and the most observant and patient will give you the chance to hold a tench in your hands – this slow fish, in whose slowness an enviable hiding strength and perseverance!
