Night fishing with Bologna gear

Night fishing with Bologna gearA long-range float fishing rod has long been included in the minimum arsenal of most anglers in various regions of our country. This article will focus on night fishing on rivers with the passage. Personally, I became closely acquainted with night coastal fishing “lap-dog” in the early nineties, when I caught a predator on the Dnieper at a foam heading (the tackle that will be discussed, of course, is not Bologna in its pure form, but it is very close to it, therefore, in the absence of another , we will use the term "lap-dog"). I decided at nightfall to go "night shift" for zander. Moving along the shore in search of fish, in the distance I saw a cascade of moving lights. Some burned constantly, and some of them died out, so that after some time, briefly flare up again.

At first, I naively took this illumination for the illumination of night covetous. When he came closer, I saw about fifteen people moving in a string at a small distance from each other downstream. Most of the wiring did not use lighting at all, for them there was enough light from the lamps located on the shore. Flashlights turned on only to replace bait or remove fish from the hook. Some lucky ones were owners of miners ’horse races’ – typical miners, but instead of a Kyle or a jackhammer, they were all armed with telescopic fishing rods with rings equipped with inertialess reels. In a powerful beam of light, a float, of almost any design, was visible as at day at any distance. Fishermen, having made the posting of 15-25 meters, reached a certain place and exhausted the gear, returned back to the starting point.

If someone had a bite, then after hooking, the participants in the "procession" made it possible to pull the fish ashore. And so wiring for wiring. But I, in fact, was not struck by this. I, especially not delving into the reason for such a late finding of an nth number of adults at this hour on the river bank, went about my business – I quickly walked past, stopped about twenty meters away and, making a throw, concentrated in the hope of catching a fang. I heard the coastal fuss every now and then, but for some reason the main and most frequent sound highlighted for my ears was the rustling of bags. It seems to be a common thing, but with a change in the direction of the wind, my observation did not compensate for my observation – I clearly heard that the sounds of a fish fluttering in the bags and of a rather large size, previously diluting the silence with a distinct "tangle" on the shore. Interest prevailed, and for a while I took the position of observer. That night, fishing was exemplary – everyone, as one without stopping, stuffed bags with a large red-feathered bream.

I got the adrenaline, and in the night I’m in the same place with the same (as I thought) gear. True, he became a bit downstream – what else, did not stomp along with everyone! Of the nozzles – dough, mastic and red worm. Plowed the night, and the result is zero squared? And the people, dragging one copy after another, as if mocking, actively replenished their food supplies with this delicious fish. Only in the morning did I, the inexperienced, manage to analyze the cause of the failure. The depth at which I was fishing was three to four times less than the depth of fishing – in the dark their sliding floats, which were close to the hook, I took for the fishing depth !? And most importantly: they fished at the reel, and I on a typical "table". Fishing is fishing; flew – I will be smarter! After two days, I thoroughly changed the equipment and came to the same place, but already on the roll. Having set the depth according to all the rules, he began fishing. By morning, in my bag there were about two kg of fish, and experienced miners had five to ten kg. And this is in 4-5 hours!

The point in my research was put nevertheless by belated observation. On the way to the subway, I walked under the impression of the past fishing, thinking about the possible flaws in my gear. Along the way, I saw an open box consisting of two compartments at one of the fishermen who was going home. In one, some kind of ginger mixture was poured (later it turned out to be an ordinary tyrsa for storing bark beetle larvae), and in the other, I recognized them right away – caddis flies. Having talked (which was pretty surprising: for two fishing it was not possible to talk to anyone humanly, the “miners” are sullen people), I found out that the most productive fishing this year was using the “tail” and the larvae of the bark beetle as bait … So bit by bit I collected working information for this place. Something refuted, something supplemented. Further fishing was more productive, constantly increasing and supplementing my arsenal of knowledge in this interesting form of fishing, and a chance acquaintance on the shore grew into a strong fishing friendship.

Now, having personal “mining” experience, I will try to express my vision of night fishing “lapdog”. It will be about proven gear that will suit different fishing conditions and help the reader to make their fishing trip successful. The rod, in my understanding, is definitely a “telescope” 3.6-3.9 m long with a casting of 5-25 g. Why a “telescope”? Because it is very convenient in transportation. In addition, the gear is operational in minutes. Yes, and moving from place to place is very convenient – do not forget, the night is in the yard, and in places where there is a bush or trees, it is extremely easy to break the rod. Why 3.6-3.9 m? I will answer: a shorter fishing rod worsens contact with tackle, and this length is frankly short for full casting and fishing. The large length, in my opinion, did not justify itself either. When several people are catching on one site (after all, it is a promising place that always collects those who suffer from fish), the risk of colleagues breaking the rod is great. Not from evil, but from ordinary sluggishness.

Especially in the dark, beginners sin. I recommend always using either a telescopic stand for a fishing rod in the sand or a compact collapsible tripod for concrete. When replacing the bait or after catching the fish, I recommend to put the “tulip” of the rod always in the same direction – downstream, at about an angle of 45 degrees to the coast. If the shore is chained to concrete, I recommend protecting the tip of the handle with several layers of electrical tape, protecting it from damage. The best material for rods is carbon. The pace of fishing is very high, and with a heavy fishing rod the night work turns into flour. After catching with a “specific hoe,” many people have sore back muscles and, especially, hands. Rings are desirable with an increased diameter – a large diameter allows you to cast further even with a fishing line of "amateur" diameter and perfectly passes the locking assembly.

The need for high strength rings is due to the huge number of wiring and the abundance of dirt in the aquatic environment. In such conditions, an ordinary monophilic fishing line is able to act on the rings as a file. I draw your attention: when pulling out the equipment, the rod should be placed almost in line with the fishing line to reduce the friction of the fishing line on the ring sleeves. Be sure to have a container with a dishwashing detergent diluted 1: 1 with water! Any brand sold in the nearest business departments will do. It is checked: it doesn’t destroy either fishing line or rod, it only carefully protects it, and a small spray bottle is suitable for used female perfumes. With casting, everything is clear – you’re unlikely to use a snap with a total weight and a float of more than 25 g. The coil is suitable for any, if only reliable, although I consider the “Match” type coils to be the best – the speed of tooling out and the quality of the friction brake are fundamental here.

Floats. As a rule, these are loaded floating floats with a load weight of 6 to 8-10 g. An important detail: with one attachment point, as double gives strong resistance to the flow when exhausting gear. Having tried a lot of floats, I was “ripe” for my friend’s engineering solution, because for about a year, even for the sake of interest, he was afraid to put his float into his rigging, he seemed to me very rude. As it turned out, even an oyster the size of a bay leaf drowns such a float instantly. The second side of the coin is the size and color, the float is clearly visible both on the shore and on the water, and if there are lanterns nearby, then there is no need for a long-range headlamp. Strength and durability are an important factor of any tooling element, everyone knows how vulnerable the float is. The experimentally calculated size and mass of the float in conjunction with a replaceable antenna are a kind of plumage analogue for match floats.

Of course, there is no such ballistic data as the latter, but they allow you to make long-range accurate casts against a sufficiently strong wind, where an angler with lighter rigging will be powerless. If you use a cambric adapter, a “firefly” is easily installed on the float instead of the petal antenna. Note: hooking with such a float needs to be done quite sweeping. I knit the locking knot from a thread of HB No. 40 without adding synthetics (holds better). With such a node, you can easily catch 2-5 fishing trips. When tightening, the assembly must be moistened. The advantage of thread locking assemblies is their softness. They do not so annoyingly knock on the rings and do not slip into the beads. I prepare the nodes in advance. wound on a stick from "Chupa-chups" – and the cost is low, and the candy is delicious. One such blank is enough for the whole summer. I leave the tips on the node relatively short – up to 1.5-2.0 cm.

As the main fishing line I use monophilic Soft, with a diameter of 0.2 mm. Leashes – 0.15 – 0.18 mm. Better with anti-abrasive coating, because the river sometimes brings “surprises” in the form of a sharp shell rock, hard grass, or just a very large fish. A sliding load of olive. It is the olive that gives better contact with gear and gets stuck less in hooks. The leash length is from 20 to 50 cm, the longer, the smaller the fishing depth. Hook No. 12-14 according to international numbering. I do the wiring with the braking of the snap.

About fishing spots

On rivers with a course, these are unequivocally rifts with depths of 3-7 m and sections with an uneven bottom. If the river is regulated, the best fishing occurs when the current is minimal. With a strong current, having run all night from place to place, it sometimes fails to find the fish – very often it just does not go to this fodder area and its capture is random. If you put a float with a higher carrying capacity, then this tactical step will not bring success, because a strong current still carries the bait over the fish held at the bottom irregularities, not giving it the right time to try the bait. Casting is carried out from behind the head. Overhang snap – up to one and a half meters. I set the fishing depth simply, without using a depth gauge: if the olive touches the bottom, then the float lies on the water, melting downstream. Without fastening the leash, the equipment must be “wired” throughout the fishing sector to study the bottom topography. A little bit about fishing line: after casting, choosing an arc, I do not sink the fishing line.

If the flow in the fishing sector is not uniform, then even without the wind, the line in the arc either lags behind or ahead of the float. This must be monitored, because contact with gear is deteriorating. You can eliminate the arc using the rod, describing the semicircle in the desired direction. A little bit about the bite. The bite of river fish can generally be considered pronounced. With this installation, and with other snap-ins, the float, as a rule, goes to the bottom. It happens that you have to pause up to two seconds, and only then do a cut. Fishing time in different water bodies is different, because no identical places. An interesting fact – for all the years that I spent at night with a fishing rod in "our" places, from fishermen, NOBODY NEVER FEED !? I am sure. that in places where there is no great pressure and crowding, often completely unfamiliar people (of course, no one wants someone to catch on his stern), bait will give a real advantage by attracting and holding fish for the period necessary for the angler.

Here are the fish that I came across with this tackle or, at least, were present in the catches of others: red-fronted silver bream, silver bream, roach, bream, ide, crucian carp, goby, squirrel, perch, perch, catfish. Judge the rest yourself. All this information is important for night fishing "lap-dog", at least for me. I hope my observations will help someone to get ashore prepared and understand the taste of this exciting fishing.
