New Year’s Eve river ultralight

On the eve of the New Year holidays, spinning fishing takes on a unique colorful color – light frost, the presence of snow and complete tranquility around. A few days ago I managed to open from the ice, today I decided to devote time to a spinning session on the classics. At the end of December, if you start from spinning fishing, there is only one option for fishing with a spinning rod – in non-freezing areas of country rivers. The number of those in our region is quite small, but the sections of the Seversky Donets River themselves are stretched over several regions, there will be enough space for everyone, and fish, it seems, too.

Many spinners are interested in large and deep rivers, it would seem that there are more fish here, and its size is more significant. But for me, a slightly different type of fishing is interesting, more sporty – it is the search for narrow sections of the river, fishing for coastal snags, twigs, which have settled on the bottom of vegetation with light weights using delicate tackle. As I mentioned, microjig fishing in winter is a classic that has been with me forever from the very beginning.

By the way, the winter schedule of fish activity is the most unpredictable. That is why, I come to the river early in the morning, drink a cup of hot tea on the shore and start punching familiar points from the coastline, such as the perch beds of the Seversky Donets.

This time I moved to the Eskhar region, the non-freezing section of the river with a warm discharge is obliged to give out perch, because the water is saturated with oxygen and there is an abundance of fry. Nevertheless, this time I did not follow the usual route for all spinning anglers, I decided to cross the river across the bridge and move around the bend of the river near the warm discharge. I wanted to explore wild places in which I have never been, during my entire stay here.

The area around is simply incredible beauty, complete silence reigns, absolutely deserted places can be seen and new points open – this gives the desire and confidence to move on. Beaver burrows, coastal dams, which they also built – wild nature, which has not yet been touched by human hands. Watching this from the outside is a special pleasure. And if you have a cup of fragrant tea in your hands, then this is the highest satisfaction.

Today I am with a classic ultralight kit, which brings me tremendous pleasure all year round. As baits and consumables, I took with me a minimum supply in the form of a couple of Meiho boxes and several packs of edible silicone baits. In particular, as always in winter, I fish for perch with passive slugs Bait Breath Fish Tail and Bait Breath Fish Tail Ringer in tandem with Intech Tungsten tungsten weights of small weights. As a fluorocarbon, I use Intech float material, 0.141 diameter. This thickness is enough to get a large perch, of course, correctly working with the tackle, and in order not to interrupt the installation once again in case of a snag. I consider this diameter of the leash material to be the ideal average for catching perch at any time of the year with microjig tackle.

The first points immediately began to bring fish, the coastal driftwood worked out its purpose stably. According to my observations, one of the facts is characteristic for the snagger – there is no schooling perch, often single perch adhere to it, displacing outright trifles. And the behavior of the perches is special, different from their counterparts living on the beach and riverbeds. Striped predators behave like a decent pike. They sit under a snag and so, at times, attack the installation, that the spinning rod hardly flies out of the hands. Therefore, fishing for perch in such conditions is the most exciting and extremely interesting.

During the time allotted for fishing, we managed to pass a dozen promising points, only five of which gave out fish. The perches are quite pinpoint and require searching. A special delicate animation with long pauses and short throws is the key to success in catching winter perch.

A country trip to a rather pressed section of the river was a success, the fish were caught, the perches were measured, after the photo session they were released. How good it is when you can go out and fish on the ice and take a spin with a spinning rod on the river.
