Knobes for reel

"Greetings, amateur fishing homemade! From this article you will learn how to make practical, beautiful and pleasant to the touch set-up knobs with your #REFIRM, using an elementary tool and a drop of desire. Full instructions with detailed illustrations are given below. Dare! … "

Well, okay, jokes aside …

Hi, PhishingSib!) In this article I will really tell and show you how to make typesetting knobs for the coil. But! Objectively understanding that it is unlikely that anyone will repeat this process (though? …), please treat the article not as instructions, but as … to … In general, as they say, pour some tea and enjoy reading!)

In September last year, my friends and I were fishing for four days on the Ob. Rain, wind, cold … MULT … My hands were constantly wet and blown by the "gentle" Suzunsky "breeze". Fishing took place at a very energetic pace, and on the reel there was a handle with native non-separable knobs from not the softest plastic. In general, on the fourth day, the corn between the fingers did not allow me to fully fish …

I began to look for what to replace these "finger-type" knobes with. And very quickly found – knoby from the cork. But the price was very frightening … And just at the moment between “found” and “frightened” I clearly imagined the technology by which I could make knobes myself, and in exactly the form that I wanted. The solution is birch bark. I got a cheap handle with collapsible knobiks and in a couple of days I made the first craft. I liked it very much! Both the process and the result!

Further more. I decided that the reel working on a fishing rod with a cork handle should look "more charged". I also made new things for her … Then for another coil … Then I redid the first … Then for another … In short, I mastered the process completely and repeated it many times!

I was not going to write an article on this topic. But the other day I bought a reel, which is planned for a fishing rod with a cork handle … Yes, and the guys from the site said that the article was needed … Yes, and the self-made competition should always be supported! Yes, and Sid Spirin sang: "Do it yourself!" Do it yourself! ”))))) In short, I got down to business!)))

We all know the Golden rule of the do-it-yourselfer: “Before you do something, you need to break something!” So I, without thinking twice, disassembled the native knobes of the coil and, making sure that the “flesh” was planted in a base from a plastic tube, I removed everything superfluous with an office cutter. Well, Michelangelo Buonarroti is direct …

We need, as you already understood, the basis of the knob. In this coil model, it turned out to be two-component, which further added to my problems, but usually (in other handles) the base turned out to be solid. In some handles it was made of metal.

Dealt in the same way with modern Shimanov knobs. There, almost all knob is the basis. It had to be almost all and cut to a rounded shape.

Next, we prepare and process the main material – birch bark.

To Aleksey “Bezrukov”: “Lyokh, ecologists can safely sleep! All bark from legally purchased firewood. Personally, I was stripped, selected and dried!))))

Birch bark – cool homemade material! Easy to handle, nice and durable to use. Many, I think, saw old knives with birch bark handles. And my handles for winter fishing rods, which I made of birch bark, did not even lose the appearance of the thing just done over the past winter. Not to mention the strength characteristics …

Then I needed a drill bit with an inner diameter of 22 mm. As well as a screwdriver, cutter and needle for picking workpieces from the drill.

The procurement process is quick and enjoyable. The output is birch bark patch with a hole in the center. Loose upper layers of birch bark should be removed immediately from the workpieces.

Next, I drilled a central hole to the diameter of the cross section of the base of the knob. In this case, an 8mm drill was needed. Drilling birch bark discs is more convenient with a small stack – 3-4 discs at a time.

Everything went fine.

Gluing the package.

For the next operation, I moved to the table of my workshop, because the stage is not fast and requires perseverance.

The first disk is located so that the outside has a dense surface, that is, the inner (yellow) side. In the same way, I did it from the other side of the knob. And the location of the disks inside the package will not affect anything. Eagle or tails – whatever.

Traditionally glued with epoxy. In this case, the EAF is a fast rejection. No negative moments have been connected with him yet.

This time, the workpiece was dried for about 12 hours. 4 would have been enough, but went fishing that day ….)

Locksmith and lathe.

The next day, the workpieces were completely dry and I took up the humming and growling instruments. But he pre-equipped future knobes with screws, washers and nuts, thereby making a holder for the cam mechanism of the perforator cartridge. And with your fingers it is more convenient to hold such a design when working on a grinding tool.

First of all, he gave the workpieces on the roughing disc to the angle grinder a more regular cylinder shape. So in the future it will be more convenient.

And then he took up the knife … Marker outlined the "extremum points" of the future knob and slowly, gradually, removed the excess from the blanks with a cutter. Like Michelange … Ah, I already said that))))

IMPORTANT! After each pass with a knife around the workpiece, he necessarily drove the work on the “turning” – punch. Processing produced rough sandpaper. This allowed "not to lose the center of the workpiece."

The complete turning of knob on such a "machine" I do not recommend …. So my screwdriver died … And with a knife, birch bark is processed faster.

And then the moment came when the workpiece began to resemble a knob rather than a workpiece! Only about an hour has passed)))

At this point, I started work on the second knob. Good for you, meat grinders! And here we, the animated cartoons, get here too …

The hardest thing for me is the “fit”. You will grind this one, then that one … But you want one-to-one!)) A caliper and a less rough sandpaper will help you.

Well, now, after a couple (with a long tail) of hours and three albums of a favorite musical group, periodically breaking into the left ear through the howl of a power tool, something did happen!

Grinding and impregnation.

The resulting crafts are not so pleasant. Need grinding. I use 800th paper. Grinding "raw", that is – with water.

It already looks presentable after that, but …

They told me that it is possible to grind after that also on soft natural fabric. I tried it – excellent. Craft becomes even smoother. At the same time, it immediately washes, because it is also sanded – with water.

After a little drying, I, following the advice, soaked full-fledged knobes with hot linseed oil. It should give water-repellent properties … So far I noticed only a slight color change and a specific smell …

Well, like be, and u! We remove the excess oil with a paper towel and collect the coil …

It turned out exactly what I wanted. Lightweight, comfortable, warm knobes that you don't want to let go of! Harmonize with cork handle will be "on urrra!"

Or maybe this is not the main thing? ..

Is the game worth the candle? You know, this question arose only now when I had already made more than 10 knobes and added this article … And it was posed not by me, but by a reader asking the author … Yes, a lot of troubles, a lot of time, a lot of work …

I belong to that “sect” of anglers, who are usually condescendingly called “aesthetes and pedants”. The beauty and accuracy of gear means a lot to me. And a good photo of gear or fish is almost always the most coveted trophy.

On the other hand, I like to do it myself. And just the passion for fishing gave direction to a creative impulse … The details of the puzzle coincided extremely successfully!

The process described in this article was not a burden to me. It was a fun and very exciting activity, which allowed me to plunge into it with my head … I really hope that I will soon come up with some other similar project, otherwise the coils are over …)))))

All tails and scales!)))
