Many fishermen, when they come to a new body of water for themselves, encounter the main problem, on which the success of future fishing largely depends. Namely, how to find fish in an unfamiliar place, from what places to start fishing, what bait to catch and in general, what kind of fish to catch. And if with lake fishing everything is somewhat more complicated, then without the help of an echo sounder, depth maps or a local guide, there is nothing to do. If you come to a large river, then things are somewhat different.
Firstly, the river is much easier to read, it can be done without the help of an echo sounder. And secondly, the tactics of finding fish on the river are somewhat simpler. It is not necessary to sail tens of kilometers across the water in search of a “miracle”. First of all, you need to work out for yourself a certain “system” for finding fish. First of all, each river along its entire length is repeatable and similar in nature to the places. It means that, for example, on the river section, say 15-20 kilometers there will be a certain number of turns, direct runs, pits, old ladies, backwaters and so on. Therefore, the easiest and most effective way is to first choose a section of the river for yourself, on which there will be sections of a different nature and type and try to catch them all.
It is advisable to use different baits that will suit specific fishing conditions. Thus, after the first fishing of the intended water area, we can at least somehow determine which particular predator is currently active, on which types of bait there were bites, but most importantly, in which places there were contacts with fish. Indeed, the predator’s sites at a certain time and in a certain reservoir depend on many factors. This may be the temperature of the water and its transparency, the presence of any vegetation or underwater shelters, and, most importantly, the presence of a food supply.
After all, when you first appeared on an unfamiliar river, you cannot know where and why the fish is standing now. Therefore, our main task is to quickly determine the concentration of the predator. We can achieve this only with the help of a quick search of various places. After we determined in which places we had bites, (in the pits, in the runs, in the old ladies, in the snag, etc.), we proceed to the selection of lures. Firstly, we already had some bites in certain places on a certain bait, and we have something to build on. Well, and secondly, based on what we already know in which place the fish is, it’s easier for us to choose the bait from our arsenal, which is best for catching this place best.
Well, the third point in determining tactics and strategy of actions is to determine which predator is currently most active, and what kind of fish to bet on. And this, too, will become more or less clear after the initial exploration of a certain area.
And now, after all, when we decided on the fishing object, calculated the nature of the places, picked up the most suitable lures, only then we can move more widely across the water area and look for similar “dots”. It is in this sequence that you need to work in an unfamiliar area. And then in a fairly short period of time, you can quickly navigate to a new place and quickly find the right fishing tactics.
