Float rod set

For stationary float fishing, you should have several rods of different types and lengths. Now, at the very beginning of spring, it’s time to think about which rods to give preference to, what should be acquired in the first place. There is a wide range of fishing rods on the fishing market, and making an informed choice in all this diversity can be difficult. In my opinion, the main contender for the role of the first rod in the float’s arsenal is the seven-meter swing. The flywheel seven is well suited for fishing both in stagnant water, ponds and lakes, as well as on streams, rivers and canals. If the wealth allows, then it is worth buying a rod from the Italian factory Reglas. All types of float rods are produced here, for example, from well-known companies such as Maver and Milo. It is their rods that are used by the majority of domestic fishermen-sportsmen and advanced amateurs.

Such a swing will cost 7-11 thousand rubles. depending on the grade of graphite, stick weight and pitch. The Italian company Kolmic also has very good fly rods. In all cases, when choosing a rod, you should pay special attention to its weight: fishing all day with constant re-throws is not at all easy. The average weight of a high quality swing seven made by Reglas is 190-240 g. In recent years, quite decent Korean swings from Black Hole have appeared on the domestic market. The Korean seven is about half the price of the Italian one – 4-7 thousand rubles. depending on the model. The rods of the Chinese manufacturers deserve attention. They are the most affordable. You can find on sale Chinese fly-sevens of good quality costing 2-2.5 thousand rubles.

When replenishing your arsenal, you should purchase a 5-meter swing rod. It is sometimes absolutely necessary, especially on small ponds, small and medium-sized rivers. A good Italian five costs 2500-5000 rubles, a Korean one will cost 1500-3000 rubles. Such rods usually weigh 100-160 g, depending on the grade of graphite and the thickness of the walls of the rod knees. Last year, at the Moscow region float fishing championship on the city canal in Bronnitsy, many athletes very successfully caught 1-1.5 kg of bream with light fives.

If you often have to fish in a deep water channel or a wide river, it is useful to have an 8-9 meter fly rod in your arsenal. And on a shallow body of water, it is very useful. It can be recalled that the Moscow team Maver not so long ago won one of the Russian championships in float fishing thanks to the long swings when all the other teams were fishing with plug rods. At a shallow depth of the reservoir in the venue of the competition, the use of long swings allowed the Maverians to catch much further than the plug distance, they reached out to the active fish and played it out much faster.

However, despite this example, the plug occupies a very important place in the modern arsenal of float rods for stationary fishing. With low fish activity, they manage to make lightning sweeps in response to the most careful bites, since the distance from the top of the rod to the float is only about 0.7 m.On rivers and canals, only the plug allows you to clearly slow down the rig until the float stops completely above the lured table. Moreover, the greater the depth in the place of fishing, the more promising is the use of the plug. In addition, due to the presence of a rubber shock absorber inside the plug whale, it is enough to just slightly raise the rod when biting, and the fish will be detected by itself.

With a 13m plug, I rarely fish using its full length. Most often I do not deliver one or two knees and fish at a distance of 9.5-11 m. Fishing at full length is technically somewhat more difficult, you get more tired and, accordingly, you get less pleasure from fishing. I use the maximum length mainly in late autumn, when the fish is moving away from the shore, or if the depth and level perspective table are at such a distance. To get used to fishing with a plug and understand the meaning of this fishing, it is better to first purchase an economy class model, although for many of our anglers the price will be too high in this case. For example, the cheapest plugs from Milo or Maver will cost at least 16-17 thousand rubles. Chinese plug rods 11 m long cost 10-12 thousand rubles.

When choosing a plug rod, you need to evaluate its action: in a horizontal position, it should bend as little as possible under its own weight. It’s good if the plug of a budget model with a length of 13 m weighs about a kilogram. More expensive thin-walled rods weigh less, but in inexperienced hands they easily break when playing large fish or when you lightly hit the knee on something hard. Therefore, it is best to start with relatively cheap, thicker-walled plugs that are less prone to accidental breakage. Or you can purchase a plug that was hooked. The plug rod does not tolerate dirt and sand. Therefore, plug-drivers use all kinds of racks, rod knee braces and recoil rollers. If the plug is not kept clean, then breakage at the joints cannot be avoided. Even a small grain of sand caught in the joint of the knees can cause an expensive rod to break.

Plug-in fly rods are two-in-one: they can be used in both classic fly fishing and plug-in with a recoil roller. If an ordinary swing is a telescopic rod, to the tip of which a rig is attached using a plastic fastener or connector, then in a plug swing the rig is attached to a connector tied to a rubber shock absorber, and the rod’s knees have a plug connection. The standard lengths of plug-in swings are 8 and 9 m. They are suitable for both mastering the basics of plug-fishing and swing fishing. By using more or fewer knees, you can change the length of the rod, so there is no need for several fly rods. A classic example of a plug swing is Milo’s Luxury Millennium 2075. The rod, of course, is not cheap, 13-14.5 thousand rubles, but it replaces at least two fly rods and a short plug – the savings are easy to calculate. At the same time, a rubber shock absorber inside one or two top knees gives fishing a new quality and allows you to fish out much larger fish than when fishing with a classic swing rod. If an ordinary fly rod with a length of 7-9 m is designed for fish up to 1.5-2 kg, then with a fly plug you can even catch carp up to 4-5 kg, and with sufficient fishing experience, even more weight.

In the arsenal of float rods, it is necessary to include a match. A match rod is absolutely necessary when active fish feed far from the shore and cannot be reached either with a long stroke or with a plug. This often happens in the fall, and in the summer, the match is effective, for example, on fish breeding or stocked reservoirs, when active carp keep away from the coast during the day. When choosing a match rod, both length and test are important. I would recommend taking a rod with average parameters: 4.2 m long and with a castable rig test of up to 15 g. Such a match weighs 200-240 grams and makes it quite easy to cast 70 or more meters depending on the weight of the float. It is desirable that the rod be equipped with rings with SiC inserts, then the expensive match line will last much longer, and the casting distance will be maximum. On small rivers, match fishing completely replaces the Bolognese rod. The cost of such middle class rods is 2.5-5 thousand rubles. depending on the manufacturer and the quality of the fittings – rings, reel seat and material of the handle, cork or neoprene.
