When the fly fishing rod is in the hands and the first splash of fish occurs, then nothing exists that would stand between the fly fly and the fish. There is no such force in the world that could distract from the river, observations, desire, at all costs, to seduce the fish that he saw.
I want to talk about catching trout on an artificial fly, and more simply, about fishing trout fly fishing. The place of events is the rivers of the Murmansk region Kharlovka and East Faces. It is here that a spotted devil lives in large numbers, forcing every year true lovers of trout fishing to come here to fly. They give up work, work, hobbies for this. Events are planned long before they begin. A route is being prepared, equipment is being selected, a real company is being put together that is able to appreciate such fishing. Information about catching flies, good places for fishing, the intricacies of equipment and training gear is collected and summarized over the years.
Which rod is better?
So, let’s start with the tackle, which is better to use when fishing trout. This, of course, is one-handed from the third to the sixth class, and the one-handed ones of the third and fourth classes are used only when fishing on small streams and small rivers, and the sixth is needed on large lakes and very large rivers, which require extremely long casts. The main class of fishing rods used is the fifth. I do not recommend using very hard rods, as well as very soft ones. The rod should be a medium-fast system, able to break through the wind, control the wiring and tire large fish when fighting. These are the requirements for fly fishing rods.
Get ready for your dream fish
The capacity of the reel should allow you to wind a fly cord and 150 meters of backing, while having at least 0.5-1.0 cm to the edge of the spool rim. Many argue about the need to have so much backing per reel. Perhaps, for all fishing practice, you can never use even half of this fishing line. But sometimes there are extreme situations when you are struggling to the last fish of your dreams and you do not have enough of these saving meters. Sometimes a monster comes across a harmless place that instantly breaks a thin leash, if it is not granted complete freedom of action. It happens that trout fishing will take ten-kilogram salmon and so want to take it with light gear. But there are also cases when a large trout leads a cord behind an underwater or surface stone in the middle of a river, to which it is impossible to reach – deep. For this, we need such a supply of backing. For brown trout fishing usually use breaking with breaking load of 20 lb.
We pass to the cords. Recently, torpedo-shaped cords with an elongated torpedo have become the most popular for trout fishing. Why? Firstly, they allow you to gently put dry flies on the water. Secondly, a long-body hole makes it possible to better control the wiring, which is very important. Thirdly, with the development of fly fishing, the use of spee casts with one-handed rods is becoming increasingly popular. For these purposes, long cords are simply necessary, since it is very difficult to form the correct spee loop with a short body cord. The color of the cord can be from white to dark olive. I do not recommend using spurts of bright, fluorescent colors for fishing trout. Recently, it has become popular to state that the color of the cord does not matter. Therefore, some manufacturers, trying to be original, produce cords for handcuffs in very bright colors. I allow myself to disagree with this and advise you to use cords of flowers and shades for fishing trout that do not create a special contrast with the environment.
The diameter of the lead material is from 0.11 mm to 0.24 mm. The lead of 0.11-0.16 mm is used with the lightest one-handed ones in shallow streams. A 0.24 mm leash is needed if there is a large number of very large fish in the places where you catch trout. The main diameter of the lead material is 0.18-0.21 mm. In most cases, it is better to use fluorocarbon as less noticeable for fish. Only when fishing on shallow dry flies, fluorocarbon, as heavier than nylon, will interfere with the surface wiring of the bait.
About Leashes and Leaders
It’s nice to have a set of leaders with different ability to drown with you, although you will rarely use everything. It is better to use a leash with a length of 2.5-3.0 meters of the same thickness, or a leash consisting of two parts. For example, 1.25 m – 0.22 mm and 1.25 m – 0.18 mm. It should be remembered that it is necessary to connect a nylon line with fluorocarbon using specialized rings, which are available in sizes 1; 1.5; 2 mm.
Rules for the selection of flies
Now let’s move on to the flies. There are so many of them that it is difficult to describe all kinds and variations, even in a multivolume. The general rule sounds simple: do not reinvent the wheel, but buy from someone who knows how to design it well. If you intend to catch in a new place for yourself, then either buy flies from local proven fly knitters, or take the images of working flies from those who have been to these places, and use them to tie the flies for yourself. Certainly, one cannot ignore or use flies that were successful in catching trout in other water bodies. In a word, it is necessary to generalize and increase the information and experience of previous fishing trips. If flyboxes consist only of experimental, untested flies, then there is a great risk of being left without bites.
Most popular site
Today, for catching trout, the most popular way to tie all the flies with a free loop. At the same time, the fly plays well, behaves naturally in water and does not twist together with a leash around its axis. Previously, only wet flies, nymphs and streamers were tied with such a knot. Now this fashion has gone over to all surface flies: both dry and unsinkable, associated with the use of foam and rubber legs.
A bit about tactics
If we talk about fishing tactics, the main thing is caution and systematic fishing. Start with short casts and download the longest ones, and not vice versa – this is very important. Trout can stand anywhere, so never get close to water without making a couple of casts near the shore. If you are hunting for a specific fish, the splash or fly of which you saw, do not make at one point more than two casts. The fish did not react to your fly twice – it means you need to change the fly and give the place a rest. This is especially important when hunting for trophy fish.
When fishing trout, be sure to use a net that will reduce the number of gatherings by several times. Do not rush or force events. The brake on your reel is just to tune in to a comfortable cord release. Never use the brake when playing trout. The fish will tire itself if you do everything right. It’s better to run upstream or downstream for a fish than pull it up to you once again without leaving the spot. If a large fish has hooked a hole or a leash behind a pitfall in the depths of the reach, do not rush to pick it off. Trout very often frees itself, and sometimes this happens after 5-10 minutes. Be patient and just wait: you have ifyc.
Two golden rules
I want to draw attention to two rules that will help not only while fishing, but also in life. First: be competent. This means that you must be in constant search and in the process of increasing the skill of casting and posting. It is advisable to observe and “read” the river in order to know what and when the fish needs. Second: do what you want others to do with you. This means being a reliable companion in a group of fishermen. Follow the ethics of fishing in a group. Do not interfere with fishing for others and help those godfathers need your help. Never wait for you to be asked. I hope my experience and my recommendations will help you. Good luck
