We often hear such statements: “The wobbler seems to be a good one, but it does not hold the current and collapses to the side,” and then the conclusion follows that the wobbler is defective. And not only beginners say this, but also spinningists with experience. It surprises me. After all, any wobbler, even the most expensive, should be checked without fail, and if it lurches, it should be adjusted by changing the positions of the front loop, and if necessary continue to be refined on the pond. This rule is. Even the most eminent manufacturers have their own tolerances, so there is a “marriage” among the branded models. In general, a lot depends on the position of the front loop. Its offset can compensate for errors in the shape of the blade, the geometry of the body and balancing – all that can cause a wobbler roll when wiring.
Due to the correct retraction of the front loop from the central position, the “defective” wobbler goes straight, keeps upright position and does not stray from the game when accelerating and changing direction. However, finishing a wobbler is possible not only by bending the front hinge. The required result can also be achieved by additional loading, balancing and, finally, changing the position of the forward blade itself.
The size of the nose blade, its location and orientation are the most important characteristics of a wobbler, which determine its play along with the position of the front loop, ogruzka and balancing. The dependence of the nature of the game of the wobbler on the shape and inclination of the blade can be briefly described as follows:
– the wider the blade, the greater the amplitude: the game is wider and more active, the wobbler “knocks on the arm”;
– the narrower the blade, the higher the frequency: the wobbler oscillates faster and smaller, the game is less intense;
– the steeper, that is, the more vertically the blade is tilted, the greater the amplitude: the game is wider and more powerful;
– the steeper the blade, the less penetration: the wobbler goes closer to the surface;
– the position of the blade is located, and the wider and longer it is, the stronger the wobbler can deepen;
– the width and length of the blade determine its area, which determines the degree of manifestation of all the features of the game of a wobbler.
So, the stubborn wobbler depends on the width of the blade and the activity of the game. Many understand the "persistence" in the literal sense: how hard it is to turn the coil during wiring. In fact, it is important that an obstinate lure pushes a large volume of water in front of him and creates a strong hydro-acoustic disturbance, leaving a more conspicuous turbulent track, on which predatory fish can easily detect it. The blade also affects the nature of the prowling jerking wiring, the speed of penetration and even the maintenance of the vertical position of the wobbler in the water. So, the blade – is one of the most important elements of a wobbler, which affects all the characteristics of his game.
The front loop can be installed on the nose of the wobbler or on the blade. The transfer to the blade is used in cases where you need to shift the line of application of external force, which the fishing line creates, to obtain the desired parameters of the game of a wobbler, and there is simply no room on the body of the lure. The diagram shows that the farther from the body the loop is displaced along the blade, the lower, in fact, it is located. The location of the loop is the distance between its center, or the point of attachment of the fishing line, and the place of tie-in of the blade. This distance is the most easily variable when adjusting the game of a wobbler. The dependence of the parameters of the game wobbler on the height of the loop is as follows:
– the higher the loop, the higher the frequency and less amplitude; and vice versa, the lower the loop is located, the greater the amplitude and the lower the oscillation frequency;
– the lower the loop, the deeper the wobbler goes – the transfer of the loop to the blade allows you to increase the depth of the dive.
So, the loop offset affects, though in varying degrees, the three parameters of the game: the frequency, amplitude and depth, all of which are interrelated. Therefore it is necessary to look for the most suitable compromise option. For example, when lifting a loop, the game becomes more and more high-frequency, but the amplitude of oscillations can decrease up to their complete absence. And on the contrary, lowering the loop can make the game wider, but up to a certain limit, having reached which the wobbler loses stability, gets off and starts scouring to the side. However, we must remember, of course, that all the parameters of the game depend – even more so – on the geometry and location of the blade, the shape of the wobbler's body, its loading and balancing.
Load and balancing
The total mass of the wobbler, its buoyancy, and the distribution of the load, or balancing, have a great influence on the nature of the game of bait and other indicators. Location and distribution of loading are the most important design features and are set by the manufacturer at the design stage. Changing the weight of the load and balancing can significantly change not only the game of a wobbler, but also other important properties. Thus, ogruzka affects flight characteristics: if it is concentrated in the tail of a wobbler, then when it is thrown, it flies its tail forward in a stable position, which increases the casting distance. Stability of a wobbler during wiring also depends on the load: the lower it is located and the greater its mass, the more stable the wobbler in the current.
Balancing noticeably affects the nature of the wobbler's movements during jerking wiring: the closer to the tail is the displacement, the more pronounced the yaw of the lure, that is, the twists to the sides. The inclined position of the wobbler in the longitudinal plane, that is, the nose or tail is lowered, is also regulated by the loading. Finally, the nature of the game of a wobbler depends on the load and its distribution. Compared to the value of the body shape and the geometry of the blade, the dependence of the game on the mass of the load may not be so significant, but it is often the balancing that becomes the last stroke in creating a good model. When a game of a wobbler looks perfect, but it does not catch, it makes sense to work with an extra load. This is a rather fine-tuning, but there are also simpler cases of applying balancing for refinement, for example, an “unstable” wobbler.
Last fall, I had to refine two wobblers – Strike Pro MG-002 and Pontoon 21 Hypnose SSR. In the first case, the bait just did not catch. It turned out that she was playing not quite stable, which was almost imperceptible visually, but the chub made these failures alarming. After experimenting with the placement of an additional load, we managed to stabilize the game with a small piece of sheet lead glued to the abdomen closer to the tail section. Along the way, the drawing of the game has also changed: it has become more similar to the work of the famous “forty-fourth” – Yo-Zuri L-minnow 44.
The SSR model from the Pontoon 21 Hypnose wobbler series suffers from a “congenital disease” – it does not hold up the stream. An unfinished SSR plays stably only up to a certain speed of wiring, and with accelerated winding and on a fast current, the wobbler simply turns over with a belly. Editing the loop in this case did not help, and we had to fix a piece of lead in the area of the lower loop (the photo shows temporary loading during the adjustment process). Extra load fully stabilized the game. However, it should be remembered that such a load inevitably changes other properties of the wobbler: buoyancy, depth of penetration and the nature of the game.
Let's summarize. Any wobbler can be upgraded to a complete unrecognizability by changing the shape and inclination of the nose blade, the location of the front loop and additional loading. Therefore, such adjustments should be approached carefully and very carefully, especially when changing the shape of the blade. But tuning is simply necessary, as, for example, in the most common case – the incorrect position of the front loop. Some practical recommendations will help to quickly achieve the desired result.
Side to side
It is necessary to bend the loop in the direction opposite to the one into which the wobbler collapses. For example, if it turns the belly up to the left, then the loop is bent to the right. Usually quite a small change. In general, checking the correctness of the lateral position of the loop is mandatory for all crankbaits.
Not satisfied with the frequency, amplitude or depth
Last season, claims of this kind caused a wobbler River2Sea Gripp 55. It is considered subsurface with a calculated depth of 40 cm, but with all my desire I could not dig it even by 5 cm. same model. Inspection of the bait revealed the presence of a factory marriage: the front loop protruded too much.
Since the loop is made of thick wire, it is impossible to correct it without risking to break the wobbler. Therefore, I used a low-power soldering iron to lower the loop a bit and drown the bait in the body. Heated the soldering iron gently pressed the hinge in the right direction and as soon as it felt like it gave in, immediately removed the soldering iron and fixed it in a new position until the plastic solidified. You can hold the loop, for example, with a screwdriver, making sure that there is no shift to the side. After hardening of the plastic, if surface defects appear around the base of the loop, they should be carefully melted with a soldering iron. At the end we cover the repair site with varnish in 2-3 layers.
In the same way, with the help of a soldering iron, you can adjust the lateral position of the loop, made of thick wire, which is risky to bend, since the plastic body of the lure can burst. In order not to weaken the place of fastening of the loop by its repeated heating and displacement, you must first determine the correct position of the loop. To do this, the bait is tested by tying the fishing line directly to the front loop with a rigid surround knot, which cannot arbitrarily move and turn. Raising, lowering and turning the knot to the sides, it is possible to simulate a change in the position of the loop and thus determine in which direction and how far it should be bent or shifted.
Adjustment with extra load
If the wobbler does not keep the stream and gets off the game, and the loop editing does not help, you can try to increase the load by replacing the lower tee with a larger one. If this does not help, then a more radical approach is needed – a lead one. The example is described above: Pontoon 21 Hypnose SSR adjustment. The load should be added to the bottom of the wobbler, and the lower, the less weight will be sufficient. The simplest option for attaching an ogruzka at the lowest point is winding a thin lead plate on the tee shank. But a more correct and aesthetic way is to mount on the abdomen of a wobbler. Cut the lead plate with an elongated rectangular hole in the center under the lower loop, remove the tee and temporarily attach the plate to the abdomen, for example, using a thin layer of clay. Then we test a wobbler and, by changing the position of the plate and reducing its weight to a minimum, we select the most stable and attractive version of the game. When, finally, everything suits, glue the lead plate with waterproof glue and paint it in the color of the wobbler.
No way to set up a wobbler from the ones described above helps.
In this case, you can risk to correct the position of the most front blade. This operation is deadly for a wobbler. Even if the first trials end sadly, they may allow you to fill your hand, then work wonders, turning the Chinese "blanks" into true masterpieces. But first, it is better to practice on an unnecessary wobbler. The blade can be heated with steam, heat gun, or just a lighter. In any case, the main thing is to warm only the blade! If the body of the wobbler itself softens, then when the blade is straightened, its walls will lead, after which the wobbler can be thrown out. Therefore, it is necessary to warm very carefully and evenly from all sides. It is better to change the position of the blade with special pliers with a smooth working surface. In general, the correction of the position of the front blade is quite complicated, and I, for example, almost refused this method.
If you now take out your crates with working wobblers and test them in the bathroom, I think you will be surprised how many baits require adjustment. Good luck!
