Economy class carbon fiber rods for floaters

When people talk about a “graphite” rod (or, equivalently, “carbon” or “carbon fiber”), this does not mean that the rod is made of pure carbon fiber. This material must necessarily have binders (usually epoxy resins), so 100% graphite is simply out of the question. Different rods use different grades of graphite and binders, and also in different proportions. Differences in production technology are no less important: the characteristics of the rod will largely depend on what kind of weaving in the graphite fabric, how the threads are directed, how accurately the percentage composition of the binders is maintained. Even with a slight deviation in technology, the rod will receive completely different properties – it may turn out to be either extremely fragile or too soft. It is difficult to understand the peculiarities of the technology, and given the paucity of information, it is simply impossible. Therefore, you have to choose a fishing rod based on its working qualities, as well as – and last but not least – the price.

Today, carbon fiber rods are made by almost everyone who has at least a minimal technical base. The range of prices is impressive: from approximately 3.5 thousand rubles to several thousand dollars. Today the choice of carbon rods is very extensive, and you can choose a rod for any conditions and any fish. However, there are some general points to keep in mind when doing this. It is not necessary, for example, to strive to choose a very long rod of minimum weight. Long and very light swings are designed for sports fishing of small fish, and their grace and “weightlessness” are provided, firstly, by the minimum wall thickness, and secondly, by the high modularity of graphite. Such coal costs an order of magnitude more than ordinary coal. As a result, the rod will have a very high price.

It is almost a hopeless task to find a good rigid rod with guides that is more than 8 meters long. The reason for the downtime: the rod must have a ring on each knee, plus two movable ones on the whip, as a result, their weight will noticeably affect the action. The fishing rod becomes whipy, and it is uncomfortable to work with it. Some firms put lightweight Fuji rings in titanium frames, but this immediately increases the cost of the product by at least $ 150, and given that expensive high-modulus graphite is also used for such a rod, the final price goes for 15 thousand rubles.

The next point to consider is the type of whip, that is, the upper, thinnest knee. The whip can be either hollow or combined, or, as it is also called, sports. In the latter case, the lower half of the whip length is hollow, and a very thin monolithic tip made of the same carbon fiber is glued into it. Often its thickness is so thin that a connector with a landing diameter of 0.65 mm sits completely free. At first glance, such a constructive solution greatly weakens the rod. A thin combination whip seems too weak to many, even for a kilogram bream. In fact, its strength is very high. The fact is that when a fairly serious load occurs at the top of the rod, the whip bends, stretching in line with the line. As a result, the bending load disappears and only the longitudinal load remains – at break. Well, the tensile strength of CFRP is much higher than may be required for float fishing.

So the combined whip does not weaken the tackle at all, but it improves the work, preventing the breakage of the thin leash. The point here is this: if the rod has a rigid hollow whip, then the hook, especially with a long rod length, will be very sharp and the leash breaks easily. A thin leash is often a prerequisite for biting. It happens that you change 0.06 mm to 0.1 mm – and the bites stop. The combined whip noticeably softens the sharpness of the sweep, which makes it comfortable to fish with very thin rigs. Another feature of CFRP rods that many people forget about is that, as a rule, the thickness of the walls of the lower butt knee is greater than the rest. This is done so that in the excitement of fishing or just when casting and playing, you do not push the butt walls with your hands. This must be remembered if, according to the fishing conditions, there is a need to shorten the rod and remove one or two lower knees.

In this case, the fishing rod must be handled not just carefully, but with tenderness. By the way, it is imperative to plug the knee that has become butt with some kind of stopper. Otherwise, debris and dirt will get into it, which can bring many problems. Two words directly about the choice of a rod. There are popular brands such as Daiwa, Shimano, Maver, Milo, Trabucco. Their fishing rods are really excellent, but one must bear in mind that the overpayment for the brand here will be quite high. I think that you can estimate it at 30-40 percent of the real cost. As a rule, the rods of these companies are chosen by anglers who already have some experience and understand well what exactly they want to get and for what money. Another way is to opt for our cheaper or Korean brands. Of the domestic, the most popular is, perhaps, “Volzhanka”, of the Korean – Black Hole. Moreover, both companies have a line of float rods no less than the giants.

From the average price group, Mikado rods can be distinguished, in particular the Princess model. True, for some reason it is very often counterfeited, but so far, as far as I can tell, counterfeits are sold cheaper. Several times I met in stores allegedly Mikadov’s “fives” with rings for 1300 rubles or a little more, while the “native” Mikadov’s six with rings costs about 4000 rubles. At the same time, it is quite difficult to distinguish them outwardly. In order, as they say, to feel the difference, the rod must be spread out, see how it behaves when shaken, or better at swing. In most shops, this is not possible, and you have to ask the seller to go outside together to check the rod there. By the way, most often store employees do it.

From the point of view of the ratio “price – quality”, I would choose the “Volzhanka Sport” rod. It is the most elastic, in comparison with others, it has the lowest weight and a wide choice in length. Flywheels are produced from 4 to 9 meters, while the weight of the nine is 514 grams, and the price is about 5.5 thousand. Rods of the same series, but with guides, are produced in lengths from 4 to 8 meters. An eight with rings weighs the same 500 with a small gram, costs about 4.5 thousand. When it comes to Black Hole rods, one of the most popular inexpensive series is the River Hunter with guides. The line includes fishing rods with a length of 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 meters. A rod with a length of 6.5 meters costs 3200-3300 rubles. The Stratos series, a reinforced rod with guides, was also successful. They can successfully catch carp, and it will withstand a carp on the Volga. Prices start at 3600 rubles. (rod 4.3 m) and 4300 rubles. (6.2 m).

For those looking for rod weight rather than power, the Atomic range is a great choice. With a length of 9 meters, the rod weighs 370 grams. The same rod comes with Atomic Bolo guides. With a length of 7 meters, the weight is 280 grams. True, the price of these rods is already approaching 10,000 rubles. The choice of carbon fiber rods today is huge, it all depends on the approach: whether you need a functional rod or, rather, a “representative” one. At the same time, of course, prestigious models are not inferior in their working properties, and usually significantly surpass economy class rods, but this superiority, in my opinion, does not correspond to the difference in price. However, reputation is notoriously expensive.
