Having decided to buy a new spinning, they usually first find out which models are on the market, which are better, how much they can cost. If possible, most begin with the Internet, then find out the opinions of fishermen they know, and finally interview fishing sellers. Oddly enough, but having received a lot of information, the fisherman most often understands that there are a lot of suitable models and it has not become easier to choose. So how do you find a fishing rod that will bring you maximum satisfaction? Let's say right away: when choosing a fishing rod, the reliability and objectivity of the information collected plays only a supporting role.
Universal rods do not exist – probably all fishers understand this, but subconsciously many are trying to find just that. However, before buying, you still have to decide for which fishing spinning is acquired. Having previously determined the model that basically suits you, you need to find out where it is sold, come and take the rod in your hands. Inspect, shake, try to feel how reality meets your expectations. This feeling is worth more than all the information collected earlier. Among spinningists, the expression “stick fell into the hand” is in use. If this did not happen, you can, without hesitation, continue to search for “your stick” among other models. However, before you take the rod in your hands, you have to work hard, choosing the right model. You need to start with answers to questions regarding length, structure, rigidity, sensitivity and, of course, the price of spinning.
Often, the choice begins with her. Unfortunately, the depreciation of the ruble led to higher prices for imported goods, so now a good spinning rod costs about 4 thousand rubles. We are not talking about specific firms and models: there are many good spinning rods. If you are limited in funds, you should first of all pay attention to inexpensive economy-class models that are produced by almost all well-known companies. These rods cost almost as much as the products of companies specializing in consumer goods, but they surpass them significantly in quality and working properties.
There is a risk in buying cheap, usually Chinese rods, and not outright fakes – everything is clear with them, but made by unknown companies, although their products can be quite decent. The fact is that leading companies order large batches of forms in China, on which logos and names of brands recognized around the world then appear. However, “native” spinning rods are collected only on forms that fully comply with the requirements of the customer company. The rest of the forms, which can be of a sufficiently high quality, and with a serious marriage, are bought at various prices by various firms. Therefore, the purchase of the rods they made is a lottery: you never know in advance what to expect when fishing.
Having determined the price, it is necessary to decide whether to catch from the shore or from a boat. Most often, the approach is simple: if from a boat, then the rod should be short, if from the shore – long. Of course, a 2.4 m long rod from the shore to the far edge cannot be thrown, and it is inconvenient to catch a three-meter spinning rod alone from a boat: it is difficult to take hooked fish. But not everything is so simple. For example, together on a good boat it’s comfortable to catch with long spinning rods, and when catching trophy specimens, they are even more preferable: it is better to extinguish jerks and it is easier to tire a predator.
In a boat jig, you can really give preference to short rods up to 2.4 m long. The casting range does not matter much, and with a decrease in length, the sensitivity of the rod increases. If fishing in different conditions is expected, then, as practice shows, it is better to take a fishing rod with a length of 2.7 m: such a cast is far enough and it is quite comfortable to catch in a boat. If you have to catch on small rivers or streams, then you may not even think about acquiring a spinning rod with a length of 2.7-3.0 m: it is very difficult to throw them on overgrown shores. In this case, a length of 1.5-1.8 m is suitable. However, the test of such rods is usually only 5-6 g.
There is often confusion on this issue that leads to selection errors. So, the concepts of system and rigidity are often confused. The rod can be tough, but not fast. Rigidity is achieved by increasing the thickness of the walls of the blank, the use of high modulus graphite, reducing the number of binder resins. The structure of the rod is determined by the geometry of the whip, that is, its taper. If the taper is the same along the entire length of the blank, then the rod has a parabolic, or slow, formation. If the taper is increased in the apex, the formation is faster. As a rule, manufacturers use more complex schemes that combine sections of different tapers in one form. Dear Japanese rods can have such a complex geometry of the form that it is simply impossible to clearly determine their structure.
The type of fishing largely determines the structure of the rod. For example, American firms produce many short, up to 2.1 m fast spinning reels for catching bass. Domestic spinning players most often acquire fast rods for jig, although this choice is controversial: in my opinion, they are most suitable for fishing on wobblers by twitching. Jig-fishing with a quick stick is not always comfortable, especially when using pull-harnesses. There are different opinions regarding the casting range of fast rods. Some people think that they throw better than less fast ones, others vice versa. However, most agree that fast rods are more accurate, although, in my opinion, this is also a controversial issue. In general, high accuracy can be achieved only at comparatively short distances, and not on ejection, while jig fishing mainly uses casts of maximum range.
Sensitivity is associated with system and rigidity. It can manifest itself in different ways. Dzhigoviki distinguish sensitivity "at the tip" and "in the arm." The high sensitivity at the tip that fast and ultrafast rods have has recently lost its relevance. The reason is that fishing for zander, and other predators, is shifted to the dark, when it is simply impossible to observe the tip of the rod and the sensitivity in the hand becomes the main thing. It must be taken into account that the faster the rod is built, the higher its sensitivity at the tip, but the flexible tip damps vibrations, and nothing is transmitted to the hand. Therefore, in recent years, rods with medium-quick action, but made of high-modulus graphite, have gained the most popularity.
Nevertheless, high sensitivity at the tip continues to be a prerequisite for a good fishing rod for coastal fishing. The fact is that nothing is transmitted to the hand at a great distance, since the braid is still stretched, but the main thing is that almost always a loop from the wind or current appears on the fishing line, which dampens the signal, so that all information is transmitted only at the tip. Good rods convey not only the bait hit the bottom, but also the game of a lure or spinners. When fishing in the river, the bait passes through areas with different current strengths – rapids, calm, return, and a good fishing rod will give all this to the fisherman. Some rods even transmit vibrations of sound balls in a wobbler.
Except in rare cases of frank marriage, modern rods have ample strength. So the cause of a breakdown on a fish is almost always the fisherman’s blunders: say, when fishing, put the rod at a negative angle or simply put it behind his back.
When choosing a fishing rod in a store, be sure to try it with a reel on – the sensations will be completely different. If there is a reel with which you are going to catch, grab it, or you can ask the seller to find the right one. Such a request will never be refused, as it clearly indicates your serious attitude to the choice of gear. You should always remember that the rod in the store and when fishing is perceived differently. In the store, space is limited, you can only shake the rod, but not make a real cast. In addition, in the store you can’t feel how the threaded fishing line affects the behavior of the rod, and most importantly – the attached bait. Therefore, the feeling in the pond can differ markedly from the "home". What to do?
There is only one way: agree in advance in the store that if the fishing rod does not like fishing, it can be returned. Many serious fishing stores go for it. Usually a fisherman is given a week after purchase for field trials. But with the condition: do not remove cellophane from the handle and do not violate the presentation. Often, a fisherman, arriving at a pond with a new fishing rod, realizes that this is not quite what he wanted. Here you can advise only one thing: try to test it in full with the most different lures and try to catch fish. Very often, the products of serious companies have a certain focus, which no one will tell you about, and you can understand it only in the process of real fishing.
And yet, despite the huge amount of information, various recommendations and tips, the only really reliable criterion for choosing a fishing rod is the feeling of the angler himself.
